Yes. I came out to someone else! :icon_bigg

Now that my kids know, it is important that other people in my life know, so that the kids don't blurt something out that makes someone important to me uncomfortable. (Or who i turn makes the kids feel uncomfortable.)

One of those people was my grandmother.

So while I was up north at our familiy cottage, she was there as well. So when she and I had some time alone last Friday, we were sitting and talking, and I figured 'now's as good a time as any'. We talked about a couple of things that I could have used to ease into that conversation, but we got onto another relative who seems to be having marriage problems, and I started to talk about my own separation, and how I hadn't really talked about it to anyone, but now that I've shared something with my kids, I was ready to share it with other people... that I was gay.

She hardly blinked, and then immediately said something along the lines of "Well, that's OK. I'm glad you're able to live your life honestly." We talked a bit more. I told her that I was seeing someone and told her a bit about him. And that was about it. She gave me a hug when I was going to leave.

    Very cool. I'm a lucky guy. (!)

I'm amazed - usually people of her generation are very old-fashioned about that issue.

    That's awesome, Jim!

I, too, am surprised by her reaction, but it just goes to show that you can't really generalize any group of people.

That makes me wish my grandmother had taken it that well when I told her.

thats great! I'm glad she's so open minded! You wouldn't expect it from someone of her age. My great grandma who is 100 was the same way when my mom came out to her. She always asks about my mom's girlfriend whenever we visit her. I guess they were born ahead of their time.

That is great! My grandmother is the same way... Clearly, my father got his open-mind from her.

    Yay!

I didn't tell my grandmother. My mother told me it'd kill her, and asked me to take my ring off when I visited with my partner. (I have no idea why - her vision was lousy even then.) She just knew Pubert as "Pubert".

Then one day, my sister was visiting, and my grandmother asked my sister, "So what do you think about Lex being a homosexual?"

    Grandma ain't dumb.

For some odd reason I can't help but feel a little bit of Canadian pride there.

...Then again I love this country almost as much as I love my fantasy image of England.

BUT! Good for you Jim. I missed the thread about you coming out to your kids so I guess you get a DOUBLE congrats and super-de-dupe-iter (Jupiter?) hug from me! Looks like things are really starting to shape up
