Happy Birthgay!

So, yeah. I just came out to my sister on my birthday.

I never thought I would be coming out to any family members before finishing college and living far away from my family, but I did it! I pictured it either going really well or really bad, and it actually was just as good as I could have imagined. She called me back, and so I walked outside and down the street and said to her:
"So, I kinda like guys."
"Yeah."
"You know what I mean?"
"Yeah, I know you are."
We spent a good hour on the phone just being honest. It was such a relief. She was more concerned that I wouldn't be okay with it, and I reassured her that I'm fine, I know I'm not going to hell, just that I'm worried about our mom's attitude toward it (being gay). My sister told me that mom sounds more critical than she actually is. Yeah, she'd probably be uncomfortable for awhile, but so was I with being gay, wasn't I? Yes.

Then we just talked about other stuff, like people we both know who are gay, graduate school, and it just got really funny. Like, I told her I would have to give mom a reason for being outside for an hour in the dark, because we were watching Definitely, Maybe when my sister called. And my sister said, "Are you gonna tell her that you're definitely maybe gay?"
And she also said jokingly, "It's my fault isn't it, because I always wanted a sister."
To which I replied, "If I ever do drag, my name will be Sarah." (She wanted to name me Sarah before I was born.)
She and I also discussed our theories about one of our brothers, who has never dated and has a sort of lack of social aptitude, about whether he's bisexual or what.

We said we loved each other and she was very reassuring, and it's really a relief to have said it out loud to a sibling who is fine with it. I know people always talk about "a weight being lifted from my shoulders," but I didn't experience any of that, so whatever. My shoulders didn't really feel heavy to begin with, so it's not a bad thing. I feel good.

Thank you, EC. For the members that gave advice, the ones who related their own stories, and the ones that are simply here, because your numbers are also reassuring. I could not have approached this without the courage I gained from being here.(&&&)

Yeah, on Valentine's Day I gave people little paper hearts that said "Happy Valentine's Gay!"
