| Always the Observer Full Member Gender: Male Orientation: Gay Out Status: Family and friends, and I try to be to everyone. Location: Ohio Age: 22 Posts: 180 Join Date: Nov 2011 | I came out 8 or 9 months ago, and it was great, in a rush of impulse I rapidly hit all the main targets. And stopped and went back in the closet for awhile. Now I am really accepting who I am. At least for the most part, sometimes I doubt, amazingly enough despite some very gay things. But I am finally apart from my gf and thats healing (though I love her, its not like I dreaded it) and I am finally learning to be ok. So, after seeing a lot of post about coming out on facebook, via interests change, I thought what the hell. Nobody seems to notice that anyway. And what the hell! Why did so many people notice that. More family saw it, old friends saw it, why the hell did so many people see it. I'm ok with it I guess, I was subtle and it worked. But damn.

Most people seem to think that I don't care what anyone thinks, I think. I know by the end of high school I acted so apathetic towards other people, which alienated me but I no longer felt below others or put up with anything, so I don't think too many would say anything negative. Thankfully because I feel very much. It's odd, though most people have been surprised but supportive, once again with people knowing the doubts started to run through my head.

Totally wish I could do it but to many things are stoping me. But as for some of your family not being thrilled it happens. Trust me I have had a lot of people say that to me. |

On the one hand, nobody is hoping for homosexuality, on the other hand, society is moving towards a view of acceptance, thankfully. Unfortunately it seems the majority of people need these precognitive ideas to understand the world. So with the world changing in such a way, you can watch the range of emotion and thought with everyone. They would prefer it differently like they were taught, but now accepting it is often shown as the right and kind thing to do. It's fascinating.

I have no idea how many people noticed, of course. I think one of the good things about doing it that way is that you don't seem to be asking for anyone's approval. It's just a random bit of information about you, just like where you live and how old you are. |

But within 24 hours I had several messages, including my mom who then felt the need to tell my little sister so she wouldnt find out that way. Not sure why.. But it was weird, I never look at anyones interests. It makes me wonder if it came up somewhere. Or maybe people just gossip too much.

I thought facebook wouldn't have sent auto-notifications to other people...or do people seriously look at your profile? Maybe it might of been some sort of privacy setting - oh nevermind i'm rambling now. |

How did your sister take it? Sorry if this has been mentioned, I'm not being rude, I have a little trouble reading sometimes! |

Location: Ohio Age: 22 Posts: 180 Join Date: Nov 2011 | Thanks for all the support everyone. It is crazy how many people did notice. I don't even have the timeline. It wasn't THAT many, but they did notice it quickly. Rw91: I havent taslked to her personally about it yet. She looks up to me and I knew she would be ok with it. My mom told her so she wouldn't just find out through facebook. She didn't care, I am still not sure what her feelings on it are though. I really want to talk to her about it though. Any ideas on how I could bring it up with her without being really weird about it? I came out to people in person already, but this is my little sister. At least she already knows a little bit about it.

| Member Regular Member Gender: Female Orientation: Lesbian Out Status: Out to everyone Posts: 69 Join Date: Oct 2011 | How old is your sister? Mine is 13 and when I came out to her I sat her down and very gently explained that I fall in love with women rather than men, that it doesn't change who I am it's just part of me, she said "OK, I love you and now I understand why you were looking at the girl on my Twilight poster". She wrote an essay in her English class saying she was pro same-sex marriage I think if you explain it gently and as matter of factly as possible it is easier for them to accept. I didn't say a lot to her at first but told her that if she wanted to ask me anything she could when she felt ready, which in the end she did. Hope this helps you a little! |
