Finalized my name change today before the judge at my county probate court! My dad and sister were there to support me. It feels so amazing, words can't even describe!
wow. you sound like you've got more than EC for a great support system. if I many ask, what are some legal steps you have to go through to change your name?
Went to the probate court and scheduled an interview with one of the clerks. She helped me fill out all the paperwork and gave me all the information I needed. I went next door to the police station and paid to get my finger prints done. Then I mailed the finger prints along with the paperwork to the state capital for a criminal background check. I had to mail a copy of the notice to a local newspaper as well for it to be published. Met a month later (today) and the court had received the background check and confirmation of the newspaper posting. Judge basically just read off the paperwork to me and asked if I was trying to defraud any creditors. He signed and stamped it and bam, name changed! it was literally a 5 minute process today. edit: total cost was about $300
congrats and yeah heard other people say its not bad at all and quick, well depending on the city/state i guess
Definitely an easy process. I work at the courts, and in MI, it's even easier if you're under 22. (you get to skip the prints). In the county I work in, we wait until we have the prints back to schedule the hearing, as we sometimes have issues with the state police delaying them.
Congratulations! Now just wait until the first time someone asks you for your name or to sign something and you don't go all FML
