I just came out to my former crush. I tried to do it in person, but chickened out at the last minute and ended up doing it by email. This is officially the first queer person I'm out to because for some reason I found that much scarier than coming out to my straight friends that I was already out to. I felt like I'd be seen as a fraud. Turns out she'd suspected since she first met me.

Well the good news is that it went great! She was AMAZINGLY excited to give me advice, and she was even more excited that I came out than I was! I couldn't ask for a more supportive friend. She's going to introduce me to a group of her gay friends and we're going to go out drinking in the next few weeks. (!)

I'm still scared. My other coming out was to my roommates who are straight, and that felt like a lifted burden. Like a huge joyful relief. This feels like a terrifying step into the unknown, but at least I won't be doing it alone. At least I'll have her with me.

  2. Good job

Glad to see it turned it okay!

Do you have any LGBT friends to come out to, SwirlingOcean? I bet they'd be more than happy to let you join them for Pride. If you have some LGBT friends and you're not out to them yet, why don't you use Pride as your deadline?

I set myself a deadline for this coming out, and it made it, well not easier, but it kept me from putting it off forever. And I'm glad I came out to this friend. I was terrified, and then had a total meltdown all weekend where I coped poorly, but finally tonight I'm relieved and giddy. I just needed some time. It was SO SO worth it!!

    Thanks!

I definitely didn't tell HER she's a former crush.

She'd probably still be a crush if she wasn't in a happy long term relationship with a lovely woman. I can't be the jerk who wants to get in the middle of that, so instead I'm just a friend who's happy for her happiness. But if for some reason in the future circumstances changed and she ever asked me out, I definitely wouldn't say no!

Most of my friends already knew I was at least bi from when I dated a girl so it hasn't been too hard so far. And it turns out my local pride is on my birthday this year! I'm planning on posting on facebook in the morning "I'm gay! Who wants to come to pride with me??". I've also recently reconnected with a bisexual guy who was in my class in 8th grade and he's been really happy and supportive. My family (especially mom) is going to be the tough part though. Any of you come out to not so understanding parents and family and have advice?

Sorry, thegirlyoubroke, I have not yet been brave enough to tackle the family hurdle. I'm only out to friends and none of them are form the small town where I grew up. They're all from the big city where I live now. But it sounds like you've got really good friend support so far. You should talk to them too to get their advice if they've already come out to their families.

Out to 9! Or it might actually be 10. This is going quickly enough that I'm losing track.

    How'd it go, maracont?
