Apparently the death toll is likely to rise

At least eight people are reported dead in a train crash at Bretigny-sur-Orge, south of the French capital Paris.

The intercity train had just left Paris and was heading towards Limoges when it derailed, crashing into a station platform at about 16:00 GMT.

Passengers were said to be trapped inside the train and a local official said there were "many casualties".

French broadcaster BFM-TV, citing police, said at least eight people had died in the accident.

Local MP Michel Pouzol said some carriages were lying on their sides.

A police source quoted by Le Figaro website said the train had split in two for reasons that were as yet unclear.

Other media reports spoke of passengers being electrocuted and crushed.

Wow, that sucks. :frowning2: It's as strange as it is tragic, though. What could have caused that to happen? It's not every day that trains jump their tracks.

Heard about it and immediately switched on France 24 to see what they were saying - they decided to talk about books instead. :L you'd think a national broadcaster whose capital city had just suffered a major railway accident would be doing breaking news, but no. :L strange accident though :frowning2: poor people

Odd. BBC was right over it, as well as the fire at Heathrow.

I had literally just finished booking train tickets between Paris and Lyon for August when this came up on my newsfeed. Bearing in mind that I don't often (ever) go travelling round France or use their trains: weird. I'm glad I'm not superstitious.
