Equal marriage bill passes Third Reading in House of Lords - PinkNews.co.uk

Thats it, its now happening, the Bill just needs to get through the system and wait for Her Maj's signature then it becomes Law and the UK will join the likes of Canada and Holland

At long last gay people are being accepted as they should be , as long as two people are happy and in love then it doesn't matter what sex you are.
Finally things are moving in the right direction for us

    Great!
Am I right in understanding that this does not affect Scotland and Ireland? The PinkNews article says England and Wales only, and that is not the entire United Kingdom.

    Yes, and PinkNews says
"The equal marriage bill for England and Wales has passed its Third Reading in the House of Lords, following a brief and impassioned final debate."

Aye, NI and Scotland have their own devolved powers regarding marriage, so their own respective Parliament get to decide it. Scotland has already published a bill that will legalise same-sex marriage, but there's a few issues there that will require UK Parliament to act upon because of how they're going about it, so the legalisation there is expected to happen in 2015.

Northern Ireland has no plans to legalise it. Pressure is growing there, but for the foreseeable future they'll only recognise married same-sex couples as civil partners.

Just to also clarify the thread title, it hasn't been approved just yet. It has to go back the Commons for the amendment changes to be approved, which should be sorted by tomorrow evening. However, there's also the possibility that amendments get bounced between the chambers (I.e Parliamentary ping pong). As the Commons term ends this week, any unresolved disagreements to amendments could cause it to be delayed for quite a while until Parliament convenes later in the year. However, that's very unlikely as the Government and opposition have been very closely involved in all stages of the bill, so I can't see any reason why it would be delayed. It's just a possibility, so not quite finalised just yet!

  11. I swear, the US is so far behind. If it weren't for the South, we'd be on the same track as the UK.

I think it's because the UK had experience heavy bigotry against the homosexuals back then and they have evolved ever since. We're still in the phase of "heavy bigotry" (stemming from the Bible Belt).

if it werent for the south, everyone would have cars powered by sustainable, renewable energy sources, our national debt would not exist, and we would not be the nation with the highest rate of obesity.

Northern Ireland has NO plans for it, they are run by a backward hateful bigot of a person called Paisley who believes in Creationism, that homosexuality is a dangerous lifestyle etc. Kinda the UK version of Santorum but we don't want him (to be honest we don't want Northern Ireland)

Scotland still in "Consultation" whatever that means.

Republic of Ireland (where I live) separate country and is having a referendum next year (everything has to be a referendum over here) but opinion polls are showing a strong majority (60-75%)

Northern Ireland is the odd one out

Northern Ireland is like the Mississippi of the UK. There are hateful people in charge (he actually said homosexuality is revolting, and on T.V as well the second time)

Adoption by gay people is illegal, you can't change gender without getting a divorce, no laws against hate speech and discrimination, and it's still illegal to have a civil partnership in a place of worship.

It's sad really, they're holding us back big time.
