How so? The material is still available in full, you just have to make a quick call in order to get it. It should stop children from running across porn so easily.

The UK is considering measures to block images of child abuse, but that is another matter, and different from putting a layer of protection around legal porn.

Its great. Just great. Now we're gonna have a bunch of teenagers having to explain to their parents that they'd really like this, uh, educational site unblocked, but please don't actually visit the site, or pay close attention to the url, just call the ISP and request it.

If we're blocking porn to protect children's innocence, perhaps we should also block religion and politics. And school.

It's not possible. They can block the mainstream porn sites all they want but there will always be readily available porn on the internet. As well as tech savvy people that know how to work around the system. What is stopping them from using a proxy in another country? This is useless.

why not just crackdown on child porn like they're meant to? they might as well close down the entire internet, everyone knows it's just for porn (and forums).

Well, you can't find child porn on the internet through simply typing it in. It's in the "evil" side of the internet that we all luckily don't have access to, and I don't want access to.

It's funny that people will complain ..... But they know people won't call and lift the filters. Isn't that fascinating? If it happened in the US, I think people would be too embarrassed. I don't know about abroad, but it would just blow up here.

Personally, I think it's fine. If you can call and have the filter lifted, then fabulous!

They are censoring it because they know people won't call and have the filter reversed. If this happend in the US I would hope that the backlash would be too great to implement. We are slowing having our rights ripped away and people need to wake up.

so the press can tap into our phone calls and know the ins and outs of our everyday lives and even alter our personal information for their own purposes (espionage, quite frankly) and yet the government can't simply filter out inappropriate content from the internet which they're all of a sudden claiming authority over instead of blanket punishing (punishment, quite frankly)?

I'm not sure how that relates to my post, but I presume that if something is reported then they do the best they can, and also legal porn producers are generally pretty strict about ensuring people are overage because they get into massive trouble if there's someone who isn't.

They can't. In the US, the porn industry is heavily regulated, and legitimate producers are required to keep records of every model, every scene, with images of drivers license and passport, and date of production.

However, there are a ton of shady producers in other countries who either falsify their records, or don't keep them at all. There are a tremendous number of dodgy tube sites that are 100% composed of stolen content -- videos surreptitiously recorded off of Skype or one of the random chat sites without the knowledge of the other party -- and those sites keep no records at all.

What are the chances of he US government blocking porn by default in such a way that Britain did?

I'd say highly unlikely. We wouldn't stand for something like SOPA and PIPA, so why would we allow this? The one thing that's getting me about this thread is everyone's talking about Child Pornography. It isn't about that, it's about porn in general. Saying that teenagers shouldn't watch it is like saying a Jewish person is forbidden to eat pork, not by his religion, but because someone's gonna put a gun to his head if he picks up the porkchop. Kids are gonna do it anyway. I do it, so does the millions of other teenagers across America and the UK. We don't go around typing "Child porn" into Google if that's what you're implying. That's the last thing I need is some FBI agents kicking down my door because they think I'm some 50 year old pervert.

Although in all honesty, I hardly see how this could be a problem. Most teenagers have certain information like security pins and passwords to their ISP on the occasion of the internet messing up and things like that. Nothing's stopping a teenager from calling up their ISP and saying they wish to have the filter removed. They don't do some full background check on you. They just make sure you don't sound like your 12 and go ahead and unblock it. And if all else fails, everyone has a phone nowadays with some sort of internet connection like 3G 4G etc, as well as mobile hotspots, so you could use that as well. This isn't going to block porn from kids minds. It's just gonna make them work for it and get creative.

This is so stupid. As others have said, the dark side of the web will still be readily available for those sick people determined enough to go and find it. So in order to look like they're doing something, they punish the rest of us who want to watch legal porn, but will now be too embarrassed to ring up and have it unblocked. Whilst the real criminals sit behind their screens uninterrupted as they always have. Makes me so angry because they are not addressing the real issue, as always.

I should know, I erm...was a victim. I try not to think about it because I'd lose (more of) my sanity. But now, as a consenting adult, I'm being punished for wanting to explore my own sexuality (now I'm old enough to be able to willingly) and watch LEGAL stuff. Ironic isn't it? :frowning2:

How ghastly! Typical, pointlessly authoritarian Cameron gimmick. Aside from problems in family households like the possibility of one's mother receiving a "You have opted not to censor porn" email after doing so in her name because she's computer illiterate, what about sharing Internet access in a flat? I can't wait to ask some new flatmate I've just met if he'd mind lifting the censor he allowed to fall by default.

All we can do is hope that some drug baron who owns a studio blackmails him with a picture of him in partial drag with a porn star mistress like in GTA: Vice City. I assume that idea came from somewhere else. Oh well, I suppose there are more conservative countries out there. At least we don't have to call for permission to get involved in other gateway to paedophilia activities like non-procreative sex.
