Sports teams, gym classes, locker rooms and bathrooms are now accessible to all students regardless of gender identity.

Is this law in any other State?

In my city, we've got anti-discrimination laws in place for gender identity. So yes. Good to hear about CA, I was considering moving there after university.

That's awesome. If only the same laws applied elsewhere.

We have anti-discrimination laws everywhere in my country. I wish everywhere else would do the same.

Jerry Brown is an excellent Governor...and this is one of the reasons why.

    I'd heard of this.

Also, alas, I have read at least one piece by someone who whines about the "problem" that the writer says will happen of "straight boys pretending to be girls so they can shower with girls." Or some such nonsense.

The wording you use is a bit... confusing.

I assume they have to say what gender they identify with?

As the wording you use implies that locker rooms can be used by anyone now. Which is not really a good thing.

Lol, that is stupid as hell! Example:

After pretending to be a girl would have 2 options: I can keep pretending i'm a trans women, forever, with is not something a cis man want to do, really. I would become a closeted cis man.

    Or

I could admit i'm a cis man, and then people would know what i was doing and they set hell loose over my head.

Neither sounds as a good option. So, nope, straight boys are not going to dare to do that.

There are no laws here in New Mexico, but I could see these potentially happening.

I assume that they have to be recognised as trans by the school/college first (whether or not they have transitioned). That wouldn't be as simple as just claiming to be trans to get into the wrong locker room on the spur of the moment.

I think that the law is great because it allows transgender students to use whichever restroom they want, but at the same time, I think that it's unfair to the non-transgender students because for example, a transgender boy claiming to be a girl could possibly choose to use the girl's restroom to take a shower with the girls as a way to spy on the regular girls.

It isn't as simple as that. They need diagnosis, official recognition by the school and stuff and then they are entitled to their rights. And there are men in the women's locker rooms a decent chunk anyways. Trans men. Because they weren't legally allowed to use the boys one until now.

^This. And besides, how would that scenario be any different to gay people using locker rooms and having the option to spy on people of their own sex?

Thank you guys. It drive me nuts when people say stuff like this and you responded well. I'll probably use that explanation in the future.

Also CO has the bathroom law. You don't have to get an official diagnosis either if I remember right. You have the right to go in whichever one your presented gender identity matches. (Which still has got to suck for genderqeer people.) But this was upheld for schools in the case concerning Coy Mathis.
