Very interesting article. I've learned more about the USSR in the past few months than I did when my thirst for Cold War media was high a few years ago.

Wow, I didn't know that chauvinism, anti Semitism and racism are all still strong in Russia as well. They have a long way to go.

Wow, I did not realise how horrible it stil lis in russia. I agree with the writer; the olympics should not be held in russia with all the racism, anti-semitism, sexism, and homophobia that is occuring. It's sad to think that, that much hate can still exist.

^ Yes, but there were mentions of it in the article. She said that the place never truly changed except the economic stuff. It's basically been a dictatorship with the people saying the same things whether or not they were supporting a communist state.

I'm so lucky I've grown up in the West where everything I liberal, I can't imagine how I would cope in a less liberal part of the world.

A well written article for the most part. I've studied Russia in the past, so this doesn't really come as a surprise unfortunately - Russia has had one oppressive regime after another for most of its existence. And unfortunately to complicate things Russia's transition from the USSR to the Russian Federation just swung from one corrupt economic extreme to the other, the old state-run enterprises mostly falling into the hands of the old state elite, as the article points out.

Until Putin is gone I really don't see Russia improving in any significant way. In all honesty, the current "democratic" system Russia has is terribly flawed. The largest party, United Russia, has routinely been criticized as corrupt under Putin, and the second largest party is none other than the former Communist Party which was overthrown and has since tried to "re-brand" themselves.
