    The IRS today announced that a gay couple who is legally married in one state will be able to file a joint tax return even if they live in a state where gay marriage is legal.

    For example, my boyfriend and I live in Michigan, where gay marriage is banned. But if we just head on over to Iowa, we can get married, come back to Michigan, and file our federal taxes jointly as a married couple, but we'd still have to file separately for state taxes.

    This should prove to be an interesting dilemma for conservatives. They hate taxes, so anything that might make more favorable tax rates would usually meet their approval. But in this case the people who benefit are those "awful gays who are ruining marriage."

    No they're actually getting less money out of us now, when you file jointly in the US you usually end up paying significantly less than if you file separately. So the IRS is getting less money to do the right thing :slight_smile:

    I just noticed my typo there, I meant to say that your marriage is valid at the federal level even if you live in a state where your marriage is illegal. Sorry about that.
