Coming to terms with homosexuality is hard enough without the government getting involved. Here's what's happening in Russia... Russia’s gay law isolates LGBT teenagers - The Washington Post

Unspeakable disgust towards the level of homophobia in their society. Heart goes out to every member of the LGBT community that has to hear it.

I was wondering if they could be legally charged for even admitting they're gay. Really this is like looking at 1950s US, that's how backwards russia is. Really pathetic for a 'developed country.' Just terrible.

Lately I have been wondering if there are any local or international organizations which use donations from inside the country or from abroad to help off-set the financial consequences of breaking or opposing these oppressive laws. Donated money could be used, for example, to pay fines, pay legal fees, defray operating costs or even assist someone doing activist work who would otherwise have to obtain "paid" employment. I was inclined to ask here whether anyone knew of any organizations doing this sort of thing but, clearly, revealing the name of such an organization in a public forum such as this could put it and the people it assists in jeopardy. I will have to assume that such organizations do, indeed, exist and that somehow they will find me...

Little steps at a time, Putin and his bloody gang of church and business will start adding more enemies to the list, will start making punishments harsher, and will eventually end up with a neo-Nazi regime.

Russia is so fucked up. This just proves that religion and tradition are a bad thing which only makes people stupid. Their politics and traditions are taking them down a very bad road which may end badly for them.

Russia isn't fucked up just because of religion. We have religion in the US still and we're not nearly as bad as them. Russia is fucked up more because they are still Communist. Ever since the beginning of the 1900's and they overthrew the czar, that country has been Communist. Even though they try to say that they aren't anymore, they still are. That's why that country is still so backwards and hates gays. Because communism is nice in theory, but it never works out in real life the way it's written down on paper.

Im just gonna pray for the gay people over there, especially the minors. Hopefully, they repeal the anti-gay laws soon...

Um, Russia is not communist. Not even close.

And being communist has nothing to do with Russia's traditional homophobia, which predates the Communist era. (Lenin and the Revolutionaries actually legalized homosexuality in Russia after the Revolution, throwing out the Tsarist code which had made sodomy a criminal offense).

Religion was a major contributing factor to Russian homophobia historically, it was a major factor even in the Soviet Union (Stalin criminalized homosexuality partially as a way to please the Russian Orthodox Church), and today the Russian Orthodox Church continues to be one of the most vicious and vitriolic anti-gay institutions on planet earth. And Putin is in bed with the Russian Orthodox Church and its corrupt leader Kirill. These people actively support violence against gays as part of their religious beliefs. (Christians, Muslims, and Jews in Russia all come together when there is a chance to violently bash gays)

Today Russia is a corrupt mafia state run by Putin and his cronies. After the fall of the USSR, Russia became a kleptocracy, many State-owned assets became private property and were snatched up by crooks who became mega-rich oligarchs. The wealthy disparity in Russia today is massive. With so many social and economic problems, it's not hard to see why Putin and his regime would like to focus people's attention on blaming gays for their problems, rather than be confronted with his own failures.

Did you never take a history class? They are the rawest form of capitalism. Communism died during the Soviet era, let alone when it was dissolved. There has been no Communism, fake or real, during Putin's era. a 13% flat tax and negligible public services are not Communist.

One of the largest interest groups in Russia, known to have massive influence in Kremlin policy, is the Russian Orthodox Church. They were once a government body, and ever since the collapse of the USSR they have had a massive resurgence in support. They're also notably corrupt and uncharitable.
