What right does a school have to do that? Medical history is nothing to do with a school

I don't understand how they can do that.

What harm does someone's HIV status bring to a school?!

Arkansas...sadly this kind of thing still doesn't surprise me coming from down South. Further evidence of why we need the federal government to take the lead in enforcing civil rights and equality for all, because there is still so much institutionalized ignorance in conservative Southern states.

The pea brains at this school district probably believe that HIV is contagious through the air or some other ignorant nonsense. Scary to think such fools are in charge of the 'education' system down there.

I've been told they're still using leeches as medical treatment down there. Not surprising at all.

  9. I thought leaches had merit for some medical purposes.

so, lets all keep in mind that it is perfectly acceptable, in fact wise, to ask for an HIV test from students.

HOWEVER, the school showed significant bias by demanding based upon suspicion. if the school is really that afraid, it would be better to demand a school wide HIV record inventory (but keep those records confidential obviously). that is where the big no no comes in.

i feel bad for the students, even if they show up negative, everyone is going to think theyre positive.

  12. No. Under no circumstances is it justified. Period. It has no bearing on how the school should be treating them, so they don't need to know.

^read the rest if my post before dismissing it.

since accidents happen all the time during school, it is a very wise measure to keep a record so that those who come in contact with blood or other bodily fluids accidentally during the school career. (confidentially)

they already do this with other easily transmitted diseases such as flu, strep, bronchitis, lice, etc.

it could save an ER trip if anything went seriously wrong, just sayin'
at least there could potentially be a heads up

Yes. Or, as I thought of it when I read of this school, I thought I'd stepped into a time warp and found myself back in 1983...

Actually a better approach is simply to assume that ANY blood from ANYONE could be carrying HIV, and take the appropriate precautions.

This isn't your average every day stupid.... This is advanced stupid

  16. How about not assuming I didn't read your whole post just because I don't agree with you?

This is adequately covered by existing medical policies. You don't need to see records that are none of your business.

Sorry, but it's not acceptable, and not even legal in many parts of the country, to require *anyone* to have an HIV test. In California, for example, they cannot even test you for HIV upon admission to a hospital unless you expressly provide written consent. One could make the same argument about a number of other blood-borne diseases (hepatitis, for example.)

The proper way that people that come in contact with biohazards (blood and bodily fluid) are trained is to assume that *all* blood and bodily fluids are dangerous, and treat accordingly. If you do that, you don't need to test anyone for anything, and everyone stays safe.

As far as the Arkansas schools... I thought we'd gotten past that level of ignorance in the 1980s.

Why does that even matter at school? They do know that it doesn't spread through the air, right?

Let me put this in the proper perspective so we can all understand 'why': Arkansas.
