Wait, shouldn't they get a formal notice? This doesn't seem adequate, and I wouldn't believe a text saying I had to vacate the country.

And if they believe so much in foreigners staying in their own country, why don't they take back the over 100,000 British citizens in Australia illegally over-staying their welcome?

Xenophobic crap of any sort annoys the hell out of me. I have travelled a great deal - substantially in third world countries - including many from which refugees are now coming. I think the majority of these comfortable, middle class, priviliged white folk who are screaming about "boat people/illegal aliens" should go to where these people are trying to escape from, take a walk in their shoes, open their eyes (and their hearts) a little - and then see if they still feel the same.

If they say they would be prepared to sit and wait in a country where they, or their loved ones, could be demonised or killed - I doubt I would believe them anyway.

 

I wonder whether anyone in the Home Office/UKBA has watched Children of Men or V For Vendetta.

There's no population growth or overcrowding issue in the UK, not even in the south-east of England. It's more responding to widespread xenophobia (in England first and foremost) against completely legal immigration from EU and Commonwealth countries by quite aggressively targeting a group that forms a tiny proportion of the total UK population and whose departure wouldn't at all relieve the problems caused by a continued lack of investment in health, education, transport infastructure and affordable housing over the last few years.

 

This seems oddly fishy to me, especially coming from a site called Boing Boing. Can we get a legit source perhaps?

Given that immigrants are generally younger, and the uk has a problem of an aging population, it really makes them worse to get them to leave. This fills me with such raging anger, really. Its not about the fact that some people got the texts wrongly. Its about treating people like they're less deserving of rights and happiness than the high and fucking mighty british (or english, more likely).

 

Indeed. Although I'm not in favour of illegal immigration at all, I'm definitely in favour of relaxing (legal) immigration laws to boost our economy, delaying a pensions crisis and making the country a more diverse place.

 

i do think the country has a immigration problem (especially illegal immigration) and also that the uk (or more specifically england) is now grossly over populated but I DO NOT THINK for one second that this even comes close to a reasonable way of dealing with it but hey thats the tories for you (grrr david cameron)
