Billboard Of U.S. Soldier And Muslim Woman Commands Attention

SUCH a good billboard. Even in countries with large Islam populations such as France or England, 'orthodox' Muslims and particularly veiled women are so rarely humanised, and I imagine this is even truer in the US. It's reminding us that not only do Muslim women have their own lives and families, whether mixed-race families or not, it's also helping destigmatise veils regarding their association with terrorism and extremism.

I really can't see how anyone could consider this offensive. It might make you think, but it's hardly pushing a controversial agenda or doing anything more than what should be obvious.

I think it's nice. I like when people take action to promote unity and tolerance.

The people most likely to be offended by this are muslims.

Granted, being veiled is an offence to women's liberation.

That's great that a company has taken it upon itself to promote an issue like this!
Maybe the start of a new series?

Being forced to be veiled (as they are in many middle-eastern countries) is awful. The veils themselves aren't though, and they are perfectly fine provided the wearer wants to wear it and has the ability to not wear it if they choose.

It's about time common sense comes back into view. I love it when people do stuff like this. :icon_bigg

I never even thought about it like that. They really are repressed people who are usually just placed in the background. I love that the billboard show that they are empowered to be them.

Actually, when I was in college, I worked in the campus computer lab. One weekend summer semester day, I was going in to workthere, and while waiting for security to come and open the building for the day, there was another student wearing the veil and everything. I mentioned it looked like it'd be quite warm, with all the black fabric covering everything.. She said that although she wore it for religous reasons, it was actually cooler than the shorts and a polo that I was wearing, as it kept the sun off of her.

The latter I can tentatively agree on in some circumstances, but why the former? I'm not saying that whether it offends Muslims is irrelevant, but given that it's in the US, it's aimed at non-Muslims.

Oppressors want women to wear veils. Whether women wear them voluntarily or not, the oppressors still win. It's like voluntarily going into a concentration camp (on a metaphoric level, of course).

The Mohammed cartoons weren't aimed at Muslims either, yet they the uproar came from their side. I'm sure that the idea of American soldiers swooping in and "stealing their women" doesn't appeal to people in the Middle East.

True, true - I hadn't thought of it in that way.
