Rob Portman, whose son is openly gay submitted the 60th and decisive yea vote. The cloture vote was to silence any intended republican filibuster. Not one senator stood up to oppose it, not sure if that's a good sign of things to come or not. Just glad it passed cloture

This is a big step forward.

I wonder how the US house will react?

Speaker Boehner like he didn't even wanna take the measure up:

    Story

Still, I'm happy about it passing the senate...I wish the house wasn't so full of assorted crazies.

That's a blatant lie by Boehner, either that, or he's that ignorant.

Yep, you're right. I had to laugh when I saw,'covered by existing law'. What existing law? A pretty lame attempt to evade the question.

The two statements are pretty contradictory, as well.

But maybe they will take the measure up.

    I see two scearios:

    1. Boehner caves to the Tea Party faction, as a kind of concession to make other deals later, and let's the bill die.

    2. Boehner realizes that having his party too closely tied to anti-gay and Tea Party politics is hurting the party image, and takes the measure up, buoyed by the defeat of VA tea-bagger Ken Cuccinelli, and the victories of Christie and Bill DeBlasio.

DeBlasio's expected to win? That's a pleasant surprise! I just hope somehow Christie loses.

Oh, should have been more clear...

Christie will win in NJ, Gov. race,

DeBlasio as NYC mayor. Not a huge deal, but still the first Democrat to be mayor of NYC in 20 years. (which seems odd)

So I was thinking with two major Democratic wins, (NYC and VA), maybe Boehner will be willing to play ball.

And though I'm not a Christie fan, the fact that he's the only major Republican to win while taking a less extreme stance might tell Boehner to be more careful.

    Here's hoping!

This is really exciting. I know it's a victory for the whole of LGBT+, but I'm particularly stoked for the impact this would have on the trans community. I feel like they face a lot of hate in this area.

This sums up my feels pretty well. :icon_bigg :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:ride:

Also, Boehner's an ignorant ass. These are the kindest words I could find.
