HOUSTON -- Dave Wilson chuckles as he talks about his unorthodox political campaign.
"I'd always said it was a long shot," Wilson says. "No, I didn't expect to win."

Still, he figured he'd have fun running, because he was fed up with what he called "all the shenanigans" at the Houston Community College System. As a conservative white Republican running in a district whose voters are overwhelmingly black Democrats, the odds seemed overwhelmingly against him.

Then he came up with an idea, an advertising strategy that his opponent found "disgusting." If a white guy didn't have a chance in a mostly African-American district, Wilson would lead voters to think he's black.

And it apparently worked. In one of the biggest political upsets in Houston politics this election season, Wilson -- an anti-gay activist and former fringe candidate for mayor -- emerged as the surprise winner over 24-year incumbent Bruce Austin. His razor thin margin of victory, only 26 votes, was almost certainly influenced by his racially tinged campaign.

"Every time a politician talks, he's out there deceiving voters," he says.

White guy wins after leading voters to believe he

Seriously?! This is pretty much the most offensive thing ever. To pretty much everyone.

I think lots of people are focusing on the wrong side of this story (i.e. that the guy pretended to be black). What's both worse and more interesting is that a "district whose voters are overwhelmingly black Democrats" chose an anti-gay black candidate (or so they thought) over a pro-gay black candidate.

In some ways, Wilson seems to be quite the cur, yet in another way, he highlights the flaws of democracy, being how easy it is to manipulate a rather stupid populace -- many of us choose our politician based merely on party, race, ideals, or sex... makes one wonder as to the fate of the future...

i remember seeing a thread or post or article how democracy only works if the people are informed, if not educated. >_<

Which is one of the reasons, in addition to elitism and prejudice, America originally had stricter voting requirements among other things. I say everyone should have to take a current events and history test before voting! (of course, I realize that's awfully simplistic)

  8. Voting tests are explicitly unconstitutional.

And even if they weren't, then who would have the right to create and administer these tests? Ugh, government is one of man's least efficient machines at present.

sometimes I wonder if education system is fucked up on purpose while there's bazillion shiny distractions like video games, celebrities, entertainments, xD

    Very underhanded.

Why do so many scary stories come from Texas? What makes it so weirdly conservative/intolerant?

This is Texas. Black, Mexican, White or otherwise a anti-gay candidate still will have the edge over a pro-gay candidate.

People can't be this stupid. There has to be more to the story. First, this is not a big political position, correct? So, honestly, maybe no one cared? In my town, which is very small, I think that I typically know about 3 of the people running, and everyone else is a guessing game. I know this is not a small town thing here, but maybe they had other things to worry about.

...Just in case anyone was wondering how much attention the average person in the U.S. pays to those they are voting for. On the topic of his tactics, while the were a bit misleading, it is not necessarily his responsibility to ensure that those voting for him are informed as to what type of person he is. I don't trust most anything any politician says for reasons life this.
