Can't really blame them, to be honest.

It's Russian law. If they don't follow it, Russia can go after them legally.

If they don't follow it, it means they give up pretty much the entire population of Russia as prospective clients.

Russia is the biggest (by far) source of wood for Ikea furniture. This says it all.

I don't blame them actually. Business is business and they have laws. They can't send out a catalog with a lesbian couple in it to a country that deems that type of representation illegal.
Its the law, and IKEA has no obligation to fight for gay rights. Don't the Swedes have a history of being neutral? lol Or is the Switzerland...
I dunno, but it doesnt change my opinion of IKEA.

BTW they may have cheap products, but their kitchen cabinets are pretty good,

And how many of you would be totally fine with going against Russia? I wouldn't. If I had a business, I don't know if I'd be up to saying anything to them. It's the truth. This is not just some backwoods hillbilly convention. This is one of the biggest and strongest countries in the world.

For our community, it's sad that they can't say anything, but I don't want IKEA to go bankrupt!

Before we murder them at the stake, let's let things work out. What if they are secretly planning on getting new wood from Canada (work with me here...) ???
We have to triage these things. If we don't, we could end up really messing things up.

I doubt if IKEA were to pull out of Russia that the next step would be bankruptcy. Doesn't have to be a full blown "war were declared", just "due to recent events involving gay rights in Russia, we have decided not to continue to do business in Russia." Could even take out the "involving gay rights" part and people are still left in no doubt as to why they've pulled out.

I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of people being outraged but not outraged enough to stop giving Russia money and prestige.

I find it a horrible maze. If I want one item, I have to wander an entire store, and there's seldom an employee to help me. Just arrows and lines on the floor, like some crazy cartoon.

I'd sooner make my own furniture, than buy thier particle-board-processed swill!

So all they did was change the lesbians to something else? Big deal...

A picture of two women sitting on a couch or whatever does not equal "nontraditional sexual relations" so Ikea should leave it in the catalog. They could be sisters, friends, mom and daughter, neighbors, who knows. As long as they aren't romantically touching it's fine. They should put in more ambiguous scenes with two guys and two women, haha!

This wouldn't be the first skeleton in IKEA's closet.

That sample ad looks really cute. Too bad, but IMO, we have bigger fish to fry. IKEA can still run gay ads in other countries.
