So, we all here are familiar with the american abomination that is The Westboro Baptist Church. You know, the religious extremists saying "god hates fags" and "thank god for dead soldiers" and even "dead soldiers and 17 trillion in debt is because of fags."
Now, you can head over to their website (NSFW)., where you will see....well, lies, to be honest.
"In 1991, WBC began conducting peaceful demonstrations opposing the fag lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth." That cracks me up. Demonstrating against human rights is PEACEFUL!? Are you out of your mind!?

Go check out the rest of the stupidness and contract eye cancer from this wikipedia page on the group.

    Excerpts:
    Laugh it up.
    Gah, Americans are silly sometimes.

  2. this group gets me seriously upset, they really should stop

BTW every time you visit their website - they get money

I hate their message. I hate their words. And their methods are appalling. However, I will defend to the death their right to be allowed to spread their message. The First Amendment guarantees they can spread their message, and that they can assemble where they wish so long as they don't cause violence or slander any one person. I would never want to limit their freedoms.

Being a member of the LGBT community, I know what it's like to have less freedom than others. I can't always be open in public for fear of my safety, there are some countries I can be put to death in, and my eventual marriage won't be recognized everywhere I go. I can't, with good conscience, ask to take away the rights of anyone else.

The WBC used to piss me off on homicidal levels, but now I have to laugh at them anymore. They're such a pathetic joke that it kind of hurts. They're sort of like the religious propaganda equivalent of FCKH8 and PETA. They're beyond pathetic and all their attempts to get attention should be laughed off.

Couldn't have said it better. Voltaire (or rather Voltaire's friend as someone on EC told me) had it right. They deserve to be allowed to say what they want to say.

Besides, they've got pretty nice web design!

I understand those who defend freedom of speech, it is a noble thing to stand up for.

But, I personally must side with what my country's legal system has ruled (Canada). We have hate speech laws to address this sort of thing. We've had legal cases which have set the precedent that hate speech laws are allowed, even if it ends up denying some freedom of speech.

Hence why the WBC never comes to Canada. They could actually be taken to court and lose their court case over what they say.

The argument against hate speech laws is usually a "slippery slope" fallacy, but admittedly it depends on the political context. Canada is a stable democracy for the most part so I think it can handle a law like that without abusing it.

    ---

In all honesty, though, the more this group speaks out, the more people realize how idiotic homophobia is.

Well, I definitely don't agree with the hate speech laws over here, but it's not a bad thing that the WBC aren't among us.

I support freedom of all speech, and though there may be a fine line between "Fags should be killed" and "Let's go kill some fags", WBC hasn't yet crossed it.

So as much as I oppose their message, I believe they have the right to say it. In fact, I almost want them to say it, because they make the anti-queer groups look like idiots.

They don't go to canada (my place of birth as well) because incidentally the WBC has been barred from entering any 'british colony,' 'french colony,' and the EU. oh, and japan.

British/french colony is a term which here means CAN, NZ, AUS, UK, IE, most of africa, most of the pacific, etc etc etc

They can go hate in china and the middle east though

    Nobody likes those guys. Nobody.
I don't want to remove their First Amendment rights. Let them speak. Nobody takes them seriously, including other "hate speech" groups.
The WBC is part of why many people who would otherwise be homophobic support gay rights- thank you,you lousy dickwads!
They've removed a lot of credibility from the right wing and the Christian religion, which is bad, but the gay rights movement is gaining steam.

I mean... I haven't browsed this website in awhile, and since then I haven't heard any news about WBC. I think as long as they get publicity they will stick around. After this post I think I am just going to continue ignoring them.

I agree that they are basically intolerant assholes and that everyone would be happier if they could just be quietly intolerant, but since they decided that their bigoted message was important enough to spread, I guess that they have the right to do so.

I feel that their picketing of peoples funerals is immoral and wrong, but hey, it just gives them less credibility to talk about morality, and makes them look like idiots. I do feel bad for the people who they do picket, because having people screaming "God hates fags" through the Eulogy would really suck (But as I write it down, it sounds comedic).

They are just idiotic jackasses that really piss people off. (Or make them laugh at their antics)
