This on the BBC News BBC Sport - Thomas Hitzlsperger: Former Aston Villa player reveals he is gay

Former Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger has revealed he is gay.
The 31-year-old, who won 52 caps for Germany and also played for West Ham and Everton, made the announcement in newspaper Die Zeit.

He is the most prominent footballer to publicly reveal his homosexuality and said it was "a good time" to do so.

"I'm coming out about my homosexuality because I want to move the discussion about homosexuality among professional sportspeople forwards," he added.

The midfielder said he has only realised "in the past few years" that he would "prefer to live together with another man", adding: "I've never been ashamed of the way I am."

Huge step forward in my opinion, and one i didnt expect so soon in all honesty.

Still a long way to go, especially in scottish football sadly, but things seem to be changing fast

Says something about football that he's another player who felt he could only come out once he'd retired.

Ugh, I don't even want to think about what a gay old firm player would have to put up with. I could be proven wrong and find that the fans welcome him with open arms, but considering the amount of religious BS that surrounds both teams I fully expect to see and hear extremely bigoted chants and banners from both sides. :eusa_doh:

Even Aberdeen, a non-religious team would have trouble accepting a gay footballer. Not as bad ofc, but a sizeable portion of fans spout homophobic rubbish at our own players as it is!

The old firm would be ridiculous. I remember the uproar last summer when rangers signed a catholic player... they werent happy!!

This is brilliant news, so much respect for this guy. Hopefully more players will do the same. Its a shame that he had to retire but maybe he wouldn't have come out if he was still playing.

I saw a video of Robbie Rogers visiting Leeds united during a game recently and the fans were showing him support.

At first, I was thinking why did he only come out after retiring, but when I saw that video, I could tell he was ultimately wanting to have no distractions from his playing, which I can understand.
