The Maine State Supreme Court ruled Thursday that trans* students Nicole Maines's rights were violated when administrators at her elementary school violated her rights when they forced her to use a staff restroom. Nicole is now 16 years old. This ruling overturns a lower court's ruling that sided with her school district. Maine's Human Rights Act was amended in 2005 to include protections for trans* people but the lower court cited a 1983 law that said restrooms in public accommodations MUST be segregated by physical sex. The Supreme Court scoffed at the notion, saying a 22 year old law does not invalidate or should be used to interpret a 9 year old amendment and decided in Nicole's favor, 5-1.

Yay! Hopefully this ruling influences similar cases in other states. Here's the article:

P.S. Hmmm, link shows up weird but it does take you to the Portland Press Herald article.

P.P.S Crap, I didn't realize this had a comments section. Like most LGBT articles (esp. with trans* issues) I recommend not reading them. Or, at least do so with the knowledge that cowards find faux courage when they can be anonymous cowards behind a keyboard.

Yay! (!) That's exciting! Now hopefully the school won't do other things to make her feel like an alien or some kind of freak. Nicole is completely within her rights.

That's awesome! But I didn't like how the article went so much into her personal life.
