In the local paper in the area I grew up in, a Republican wrote an this editorial:

The phrase "Fall on your sword" relates to the Japanese practice, Seppuku, in which an Emperor who would rather die honorably than by enemy hands, would take his sword and disembowel himself in a very ritualistic way.

Barack Obama has received more death threats than any of the other 42 men who've served as President since the office was created when the Constitution took effect in 1789. Before and during Obama's Presidency, Obama haters plotted to assassinate the President during his 2008 DNC speech, fired 9 rounds at the White House in 2011, and in April and June of 2013, letters containing Ricin were mailed to the President.

Yeah that is not right... there are many legitimate reasons to criticize Obama, but I feel like most of the right-wing criticism comes from a very racist perspective. Or from thinking he is a Socialist (which I would love), but that could not be further from the truth.

Slight semantic point but it was Samurai that practised Seppuku, not the Emperor. You did see instances of it happening among non Samurai, but as far as I'm aware no Emperor has ever done the deed.

Other than that this just seems to be a Republican looking to make a name for himself. Must be an election due soon.

To fall on one's sword is a phrase that is used figuratively and it means to take responsibility for your actions. I don't think the author meant that Obama should kill himself.

This was actually a private citizen. These are anonymous editorials that are in the opinion section of the paper. These are the kinds of people who live in the area I grew up in.

Completely academically, this suggestion sounds more Roman than Japanese. Falling upon your sword is very much a Roman method, though I've heard of Celts doing it. The Japanese did the deed sitting upright.

Back when Bush was president, if you did so much as disagree with him on something you could be arrested or called a traitor for it. Now that there's an African American president, apparently it's okay to wish for his death... I swear there are still racial, sexist, and/or homophobic undertones to over 75% of republicans.

I dislike the guy and want him out of office something fierce, but I don't care for him to die. I doubt there would be a more competent president to replace him anyway. :/

I don't remember any large scale arrests of political opponents from Bush.

I like how this thread switches between politics and analysis of ritual suicide among different ancient cultures.

It is very important to understand what is meant by a phrase. We get all over the bible thumpers for taking things literally in the bible. "Falling on his own sword" is not at all suggesting that he kill himself. That is absurd. It is a common phrase, used in this case to suggest political suicide. Taking responsibility for ones actions. Nothing more and should not be taken literally.

And the instant you bring up the illustrious racial history the GOP has, you get called a race baiter, and reminded of the fact that Republicans think being a civil rights leader, like Al Sharpton or the Reverend Jesse Jackson, means you're a racist.

When I went to Washington, DC for the traditional 8th grade trip in May of 2009, when we visited the White House, there were guys in banana suits holding signs calling the new President a monkey, cottonpicker, and worse. You can't look at that and say it's not about race. Not to mention there were so many people at Romney rallies, even around where I grew up where the people there were basically saying, "Put the White back in the White House! Get that n... out of the White House! It's not about race!"

Simply put, not all Republicans are racists, but all racists are Republicans.

I... Wow, world, way to prove you're filled with hateful assholes. I'm not a giant Obama fan, I'll be honest, but he shouldn't kill himself. 'Honorable' thing? Okay, Mr Republican, you do it.

@Munyal - I think Seppuku is the more accurate example. Roman's would 'fall on their sword,' yes, but it was meant as a way to die without dishonoring you family or something similar. Seppuku's deliberate, which I think is what the guy was getting at.

This. Pretty much what I stated earlier.

I live in a very liberal state, so I know this to be false.
