I'm brought to instantly doubt the cross section of this poll. People are stupid, yes, but that is a fact that has been common knowledge (among the educated at least) for centuries if not millennia. I can promise that not a single person I could ask today would answer that the sun revolves around the earth.

... Did they read the question wrong? Answer a joke...?

Hard to believe regardless of humanity's general lack of faith in humanity.

It's not that shocking in reality. First, it is a statistic based off of a little over two-thousand people, while meant to represent over three-hundred million. Secondly, I'm sure this survey wasn't geared towards secondary or college students and its important to remember that statistics don't truly represent the collective, only those of the demographic the statistic was geared towards.

America still has a number of decades left from the population booms of the second to third quarter of the twentieth century as well. Are older generations any less intelligent than younger generation? Absolutely not. However, the wealth of knowledge that is available to younger generations these days, even those who received poor educations or didn't go to college, is so much more vast than what was available before. The contrasts between people under forty who believe in evolution, physics, and scientific theory over religion and environmental beliefs compared to those over forty is extreme.

Why does the title just say "1 in 4 people" instead of "1 in 4 USA citizens."

I'm not a part of your ignorance!

Also the article itself says 'America' when it should say 'United States'. It's like saying Europe when you mean England.

It would be interesting to see a similar survey carried out in other countries so we can draw comparisons - there was a similar survey in Europe in 2005 which yielded slightly worse results (as the article in the OP mentions), but a lot can change in that time, especially if the subject sample is so small.

yeah no offense but I don't buy this one bit. The representation here is pretty poor I think. I believe these few hundred people may believe that but I highly doubt it represents a lot

No offense taken. I just posted the news story, I didn't do the survey. I hope it's wrong.

So 25% of people who didn't have enough common sense to avoid someone coming at them holding a clip board didn't know this. Probably a bias statistic.....I hope

There is no way that this can be correct. I don't care if it was a survey of 2,000 off the map, rednecks, that have never seen the inside of a school. The question had to have been misread.

How can more people know about antibiotics and viruses than heliocentrism? I just don't see it.
