    Fun thing today:

My partner and I live in Norfolk (and have been following this case closely) and go to a particular restaurant for brunch virtually every Sunday. Today we actually met friends there and were visiting with them as we ate. I happened to glance deeper into the restaurant and noticed a couple of guys seated at a table in suits and conversing animatedly. For some reason they seemed familiar but I couldn't place them until they were leaving and standing in front of the restaurant talking and getting into vehicles. At which point my partner recognized them:

It was the gay male couple in the case (Tim Bostic & Tony London) and at least one of the lawyers who argued their case (Ted Olson) (!)

Made our day to see them and made the whole Virginia marriage ruling much more 'real' in a sense.

I very much liked the opinion. Plus, it referenced the case Loving v. Virginia, which in 1968 got rid of laws that banned blacks from marrying different 'races'. I haven't sen this refernced nearly enough in cases involving gay marriage.

    Also notable: An Obama appointee.

A Mexican case decided in favor of marriage equality also referenced Loving.

I never heard about that. Is that referring to the case that made equality a reality in Mexico City?

I think so, but my understanding was that the decision did not make marriage equality a reality, at least not initially. The Mexican system of judicial review works differently than ours. It is possible for a law to be ruled unconstitutional multiple times, and laws are finally struck down if they are ruled against three times.

    EDIT: It's five times.
