I do wonder how the judge came to the conclusion that dousing someone in oil and scrawling homophobic messages on them is "good natured horseplay".

EDIT: Hell, how stupid do you have to be to think holding a naked flame close to someone doused in a flammable liquid is not going to end in tears?

A longer prison sentence would accomplish what, exactly?

    This is absolutely appalling.
At the very LEAST, this asshat deserves to spend the rest of his life rotting in jail. :tantrum:

How can this be seen as good natured HORSEPLAY?? This isn't manslaughter--it's fucking murder.

    I hate people.

Really? Plain old assault gets more time than that! This was not horseplay, this was setting a guy on fire. In my book, that's murder.

Good to know the justice system still works. /joking.

What's wrong with society? A man gets falsely accused of raping a boy and gets 20 years in prison before getting released for being declared innocent, but scumbags like this won't see a life sentence.

It would serve the dual purpose of isolating him from society due to his dangerous behavior, and giving him time to actually be forced to reckon with the gravity of what he had done: Killing another person. And it also would set an example that the penalty for such things is significant, as opposed to hardly being any time at all.

I think a longer sentence is very much in order. It's no small thing to take a person's life in such a hateful manner, and I don't think that putting the person who did this behind bars for a good 10 to 20 years would be an overly harsh penalty.

It's not as if people here are saying he should go to the electric chair.

Turning this around: Letting him go free with a brief scolding and letting people in general get away with such crimes would accomplish what, exactly?

Letting someone go free because it is "Good natured horseplay" which results in death mind you simply promotes the behavior.

I agree with husky, this guy needs to be locked up a long time. This doesn't just say an act of passion or revenge but of sadism and cruelty. He needs to be separated from society.

That monster should be in jail for life.

3 1/2 years for taking a life is an insult

I do wonder how many have replied to this thread, unaware the article that Claudette linked to is over a year old, March 23, 2013 to be exact.

In July of 2013, the Court Of Appeals refused to lengthen the 3 1/2 year sentence...

"The justices added: “It would not be fair or right to penalise him at this stage.”

But they also stated that the Crown Prosecution Service had not provided all of the evidence against Sheard during the trial, and certain witnesses were not called upon.

“The responsibility for the failure to call evidence rests with the Crown,” the justices said."

Sounds like some people need to take a chill pill and relax =/

This was murder and a hate crime. It wasn't 'horse-play' the fact that this person only got 3 1/2 years is an insult to common decency really.

Oh well at least people in the area know they can light gay people on fire in 'good fun' anytime they want with virtually no consequences. ^^
