New online porn laws force websites to get proof users are 18 | Mail Online

The UK is trying to force all porn sites to get age verification in order to access adult entertainment, saying that it's to simply have the same safeguards as are in place on buying porn magazines and DVDs in stores.

It aims to require credit card numbers or other documents to prove that you're 18 in order to access the video on demand section of a porn site. It's mainly aimed at one specific site that's based in Luxembourg and is very, very popular even here in the United States.

The porn industry is in the midst of rapidly changing times, as it was reported that porn studios would leave Los Angeles after Measure B passed in 2012, requiring all porn actors in LA County to use condoms in the job, and now it appears that some porn sites may move their servers/headquarters out of the UK in order to circumvent the new law.

So much for the coalition trying to appeal to younger voters.

This is daft, what is wrong with young people watching porn?

  4. Governments should seriously stop trying to censor something that is perfectly natural, well sort of natural. High school students are under 18 and we all know what sex looks like because it's in our biology textbooks. This is the kind of stuff that hinders sex liberation.

I won't speak about the UK government.

But I will say my reaction if/when the US government tries this will be along these lines: we have real problems, and why the hell don't you try to fix those before you even think about worrying about porn?!?

I've been viewing internet porn since I was 11-12 years old...and you're like not even supposed to be on the internet, period, if you're under 13- never mind a porn site!

(At least in the U.S., some stupid law Clinton signed, COPPA, Children's Online Privacy Protection Act or something like that. I was joining internet forums at like 10 years old and just putting my age in as 13. Some of my decade-old posts are still out there! But adults always like to play naïve and pretend their children are oh-so-pure and innocent and need to be sheltered. Especially when it came to some newfangled contraption called the world wide web.)

I think horny teenagers will find the online porn they are looking for no matter what any government tries to do to stop them. I think it's silly to even try to stop horny 17-year-olds from viewing porn. Teenagers are obviously masturbating (and many are even having sex themselves), that's why they are looking for porn, you don't just stumble upon a porn site randomly and suddenly a 17-year-old who has been a pure and innocent virgin all his life is forced to learn what sex is.

Don't most sites do this already? It's not like it's hard to lie...

It seems to me that people are more worried about minors watching porn than they are about minors being in porn, which is incredibly stupid.

Pointless is the word that springs to mind to describe this new law. Utterly pointless. Trying to censor the internet? Lol good joke! People are going to find ways around it whether it be new sites, the deep web or hacking. Not exactly the most pressing matter in times of austerity either, is it. Why do we need to stop access to porn anyway? Is it really so bad? Even if it is bad, the cheaper, easier and far better solution is just to teach people about it. Rather than blocking everything the government perceives as evil we should just be more open about this kind of stuff. After all, lots of people only think porn is normal because no-one's ever told them it isn't. They've got completely the wrong approach imo.

Congratulations, Tories. Now teenagers will be flocking to the less trustworthy sources of porn on the internet.

What did they think they were going to accomplish? Apart from the obvious message of "we have the right to interfere in your sex life."

Alternatively parents could, I dunno, parent?

Seriously all the controls to restrict your kid's internet access is in every single browser going, hell there's ISPs that'll help out as well.

Ever since this stuff kicked off I've been trying to work out if it's the government infantilising parents or parents choosing to be infantilised because they can't be bothered to spend 10 minutes reading and pressing a few buttons.

EDIT: I've since found that Chrome does not have built in parental controls. Nothing a 3rd party program won't fix though.

Ha, I'm glad my parents didn't "parent", I would have been pissed as a horny 16/17-year-old if my parents were regulating my internet usage and I couldn't access porn if I wanted it.

Parents should trust their teenagers to explore and learn on their own. Puberty and sex drive don't just suddenly kick in on one's 18th birthday. 17-year-olds have 'needs' too. :icon_wink

    I can totally see that.
They don't want teenagers to have underage sex, but GOD FORBID they masturbate!

Since credit card details will be used as ID I also see a massive spike in credit card fraud, and a field day for hackers.

Sigh kids will just bypass the blocks, it won't be hard. In Ireland torrent sites are banned it takes literally 10 seconds to bypass the filtering.
