Plot twist! I was not expecting that...I'm intersted to see which side is in the legal right.

The above is from the end of the article. That's the debate I want to see taking place. When at long last non-bigoted Christians stand up to the bigoted Christians, and force them to justify their views. In the end, they will be pushed to the fringes of our society, as they start losing their shield of religion to hide behind.

Tami Fitzgerald has fired the first shots by calling them "revisionists" with "errant beliefs". I sincerely hope they respond.

What I find frustrating is that the article opens up immediately by labeling them a "liberal Protestant denomination". Why do they have to attach a liberal or a conservative label to their denomination? How many times in news articles have the religious right just been labeled as "Christian groups" - as if they spoke for all Christians. By throwing that label on the UCC it's a subtle (and subconscious on the part of the author and editors of the story, no doubt) nod to Tami Fitzgerald's argument. In other words, those are the "liberal" Christians and therefore not the "real" Christians.

Notice whenever the religious debate comes up, groups like the UCC are shut out? It's always some right wing Christian speaking as if they speak for all Christians? What I want to see is - at the very least - equal time being given to other Christian denominations that disagree. Let them fight it out.

You have got to love the United Church of Christ (UCC). The UCC is a completely Open and Affirming denomination. This means that every church that is apart of the UCC denomination is Open and Affirming. They welcome everyone who wants to join no matter how they identify. I have seriously been considering attending one of their services after my whole religion debacle.

Oh the irony of a First Amendment suit in favor of gay rights.

This is good I think. I've made this argument too and these religious people have spoken in support of equality in legislatures all over the country. I appreciate the work they're doing and I hope this gets more people to recognize that not all religious groups are against us. People on the fence can see that there is a religious alternative to opposing us.

I had always thought this approach could be very effective - use the religious freedom argument for religions that support same-sex marriage.

Proud to see my state going for it.

    I approve :3
A religion that doesn't contradict itself sounds pretty nice every once in a while!
