That's awesome news. I had the same prediction. I truly do believe that all 50 states will have gay marriage very soon. The states are knocking down the bans one by one... and very quickly I might add

All it would take is a broad ruling in our favor at the federal level. SCOTUS will have no choice but to take action on the next case that comes to them on this issue, and we have all 5 votes we need to get it done, as long as Bader Ginsburg doesn't retire and Obama appoints a conservative judge. But it would be a 5-4 or 6-3 ruling, with:
    Alito - Definite No
    Bader Ginsburg - Definite Yes
    Breyer - Definite Yes
    Kagan - Definite Yes
Kennedy - Definite Yes (and the penultimate swing vote)
    Roberts - Probable No
Scalia - With his record on gay rights, do I even have to say?
    Sotomayor - Definite Yes
    Thomas - Same as Scalia

Hmm, I would've expected within the next five years, but it wouldn't be terribly shocking if SCOTUS handed it down sooner.

I think same-sex marriage will be legal in all US states eventually, but not within a year, because many states are still very conservative

    This part.

It would be a pleasant surprise to happen within a year ofc, but have to just keep watch for now...

When Kennedy wrote the Windsor opinion, he talked about state sovereignty on this issue, so it's a toss-up.

    I'd say the same.

I'd guess half the states will legalise it within a year. I think the more conservative states may take another 3-10 years.

It will be like a domino effect though - as I'm sure no state wants to be the last one to modernize and will face pressure from the other states. I'm guessing cannabis-legalisation will follow a similar pattern.

Maybe. We can only hope for marriage equality to come as soon as possible so this whole issue can be said and done.

To be quite honest, I really do want this to happen before 2017, before a new president comes into office.

If there's a chance an anti-gay republican will be in office, then I don't want him, 'or her?', to interfere with this. Let's do this before the republicans take office again. If they take office again

The issue with Windsor is that it basically holds two diametrically opposed viewpoints: the sovereignty of the states to say what marriage is, and the fact that the Federal Government's failure to give the rights of civil marriage to same-sex couples injured them and was unconstitutional (however, only in the context of those states that already extended recognition to same-sex couples).

What would be interesting is if the question is crafted in a state sovereignty issue vis-a-vis the Full Faith and Credit Clause. "Don't get married in Texas, but Texas, you have to recognize that same-sex couple's New Mexico marriage license."

What will probably be most troubling to the swing justice(s) is to consider the right to civil marriage for gay couples as a constitutional right, right off the bat, or continue to see it as a state's rights issue. Eventually, I do see the right to marry (regardless of gender) to be enshrined in common law and statute, but I'm not sure when.

Kennedy won't be stupid enough to stop nationwide marriage equality once the chance comes knocking on his doorstep.

I'd like to think it will happen within a year, but is there a chance that they won't take the case and just let the lower courts resolve it?

This is ultimately how I think it's going to get resolved.

I don't know about a single year :/.... but I do think within 5-10 is more reasonable and am sure eventually it'll be legal in the whole US ^_^

Oh my god! That would be awesome! I want to get married in my own state; not move to Iowa or New Mexico or California. At first, I had thoughts of moving to Canada, but I'm not so sure. It would be so great to see this happen in all fifty states.

I'm not sure about 12 months, but soon enough. Nowadays, it seems like these anti gay marriage laws are being shot down left and right.
