House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) has lost his bid for re-election in the primary to economics professor Dave Brat. Despite a huge fundraising advantage for Cantor, in what has been a bad year for the Tea Party, losing primary challenges badly in Oregon, Kentucky, and South Carolina, but now they've scored another major upset victory: bringing down the House Majority Leader.

This is the first time that a party leader in Congress has been defeated for re-election since 1994, when Democratic Speaker of the House Tom Foley lost in the Democratic bloodbath that swept Newt Gingrich to the Speaker's post.

    Pretty surprised by Cantor losing.

One of the few wins for the Tea Party.

I always thought Cantor was a world class D-Bag but the idea that he is too moderate to keep his seat is genuinely frightening.

I bet some GOP House people try to make someone like Trey Gowdy speaker and throw Boehner under the bus.

That's what I've been thinking. Boehner barely got the voted needed last January for another term as Speaker, and FreedomWorks has been whipping up hysteria to put Trey "Cone head" Gowdy in as Speaker, which would mean we'd see impeachment hearings in the house and the Republicans' 2016 chances circle the drain.

Like Bill Maher said, I'd love to see House Republicans try to impeach Obama so he can beat them a third time.

Actually one difference....Democrat Tom Foley lost his seat and position in party leadership because he was defeated by a Republican opponent in the 1994 GOP wave. Democrats didn't want him to lose his position.

Eric Cantor was kicked out of his seat by his own party, he lost in a freaking primary, the Republicans wanted their own leader booted out.

The Republicans are eating their own.

And it's pretty scary when one considers that Eric Cantor was probably the furthest right-wing and most Tea Party-friendly member of the House Republican leadership and still couldn't come close to winning his party's primary.

Much of it also has to do with the fact that Cantor pretty much became out of touch with his district and wasn't visiting it much. As CNN said, Cantor left everything to his campaign consultants and didn't care much about campaign field work. You can have millions of dollars more than your opponent as Cantor did, but if you suck at the ground and grassroots game you're going to lose. It was also really dumb of Cantor to use negative ads against a primary opponent no one even knew about.

Textbook of how to destroy a campaign.

The only other thing he could have done to make it worse it put his foot in his mouth and bite it clean off (like Todd Akin did in 2012).

Wow, the Republicans are veering out more and more into far-right crazy-paranoia-land. So much for a more inclusive, moderate party!

I really hope they don't gain too much power; this would really be a setback for gay rights, reproductive rights, science, education, stopping pollution,. income inequality and so many other things.

But perhaps this is the last gasp of the old, white, xenophobic Bible thumpers...

Rakkaus, this primary race was all based on one main thing: immigration reform. Apparently since Cantor didn't come out 100% opposed to it, the Tea Party wasn't happy.

my parents are happy about this :frowning2:
i don't get why these people enjoy being almost as crazy as they can (eg. open-carry gun activists, we get its legal, but that doesn't mean you can terrorize people)

  17. Wasn't Eric Cantor already in the tea party? Besides, they're both tea-party members so there's no difference. At least they'll choose a different leader this time. I hope it's a RINO this time.

Not bloody likely, the primary loss of Cantor will scare the GOP leadership to move as far to the right as possible.

Which is why I have an ear-to-ear grin right now. That won us the 2012 Presidential election and the Virginia governorship last fall.

Dave Brat is FAR from being a RINO.
