This doesn't shock me. People who have sex with strangers will always have a risk of catching an STI/STD. That's the pure, unsugarcoated truth.

Hopefully, this will encorage people to delete their "hookup" apps.

Is there terms and conditions for using them?

I'm afraid that I don't follow what you mean here. Of course there are T&C's for using them, just as there is for just about anything else in your life. What they contain or what they prohibit is beyond me, since I haven't used them or read them.

Moreover, the T&C's for most things that I DO use are also completely beyond me, because as with most people, I tend not to read them carefully. I suspect that the same is true with these apps - the users are completely unaware of the terms around it. I'm sure they prohibit infecting someone with an STD intentionally, however if no one reads it (or even if they do) and that's what they want to do, then that's what is going to happen.

Certainly must have been a slow news day, since as starfish pointed out, this is sorta obvious to anyone with half a brain.....

I don't think you need a research study to tell you that! Sex app=increase in casual sex=increased risk of STIs.

Sex apps make casual sex easier to come across increasing the frequency. People having sex with multiple partners have an increased likelihood of catching STIs due to greater exposure and are more likely to spread diseases. Couple that with a culture of lax condom use (to the point where refusing to use condoms is now a conscious preference or "trend" - i.e. barebacking) and it is inevitable that diseases will be on the rise.

I really don't see the point of this research. So long as people take appropriate precautions, the risk is minimal. There's nothing wrong with casual sex.

That's surprising.. said no one ever. It's like publishing a study proclaiming that drinking alcohol frequently increases your risk of liver cancer - well, no shit, Sherlock.

The point of a study such as this is that it's a study. First, it confirms the effect indeed exists in a way other researchers can use (or poke holes in. From what the article says, the sample they used might have been biased) it puts exact numbers on it (it's interesting that the risk increase is different for different STIs) and it advances researcher's careers and lets their university make press releases.
