New Section - LGBT News, Rights, Issues and Equality

Welcome to the new LGBT News, Rights, Issues and Equality section.

We have a number of discussions around the forums, often in Chit Chat, that would fit into this category, so the staff agreed that now is a good time to introduce a new section. Examples of subjects that can be discussed here include:

• LGBT related news stories
• The attitudes of political parties and candidates to LGBT issues (but not more general political discussions)
• The attitude of religions to LGBT issues and lifestyles
• Legal changes and issues such as the age of consent and marriage laws
• Discrimination issues such as not being allowed to give blood and restrictions on joining the armed services
• Gay pride events
• LGBT issues needing direct action such as letter writing or boycotting
• LGBT groups in schools and universities etc
• Discrimination in schools, universities and workplaces etc

Some of these subjects could cause strong feelings so PLEASE try to remain calm and have respect for other people even if their views differ from yours. You should discuss and question the opinion, and NOT attack the person.

So for example "I think your opinion is flawed because..." (with reasons and your view) or "I see what you are saying but what about..." is fine and is good debating. However "you must be a moron if you believe that" or "anyone who believes that is stupid" is not acceptable, and any such posts will be dealt with firmly by the mod team.

Also avoid going round in circles. Sometimes you will have opposing views, both will have said your positions and you won't agree. Repeating the same stuff over and over again won't help, and will just make you more frustrated. Agree to disagree. It would be boring if everyone felt the same about everything!

We will also take a dim view of attacks on other minority groups. LGBT people are a minority group, so attacking other minorities while not wanting to be attacked ourselves is two-faced and does not help others respect us.

It will take a few days for the staff to move threads from other sections to here and for the new section to settle down and for people to get used to what goes here. So please be patient if there are inconsistencies or threads in the wrong places for a little while.

Having said all that, welcome to the new section and we hope you find it useful, interesting and enjoyable.

This "LGBT News, Rights, Issues and Equality" section is for discussions about exactly what the title says. It is NOT intended for general political discussions such as the US elections. The only political discussions here are those which are solely or predominantly about LGBT issues.

General political discussions belong in Chit Chat, please.
