Wow what a completely unrelated coincidence that it is almost the exact same ranking as the worlds' least religious countries!

Correlation isn't causation, but I think that they share the same causes. I think it's more the wealth distribution and political stability of those countries, not that their non-religion is the (sole or major) cause of peacefulness, though I'm not denying its role.

Just so you know Saudi Arabia is way more religious than Syria.

And being shocked that Syria is not a peaceful country while it's already in a civil war is extremely stupid .

Syria is a lot safer than USA before the war.

    Ugh people ....

^Honestly, it just seems a statement of fact to me. Civil wars tend to have terrible consequences for innocents.

The peace index is complete crap, to be fair. Austria was ranked as the 3rd most peaceful country in the world despite having the highest levels of violent crime per 100,000 people between 2005-2008 in the OECD. In fact, you're more likely to be the victim of violent crime in general in Scandinavia than you are in the US - homicide being the exception.

  9. Iceland is probably the most peaceful because everybody is too cold to fight a war.

That was 2005-2008, maybe they've done something about it since then? Also, there were different factors that lead to this list so maybe they did so well in the other five determining factors that it made up for that?

This list seems biased. Otherwise, I'm surprised to see Bhutan and Qatar so high up on the list.

    How so?

The richest countries are usually the most peaceful to live in. I think the US being so far down the list points to how it is a pretty fair list.

    ____

    Canada is number 7. (!)

I guess the US will never be high on the list since two thirds of the score are related to military.

    Yeah...
The second they put Mozambique ahead of Angola and South Africa,
I found this to be flawed.

countries that limit personal freedoms are usually "peaceful" because the central authority dictates so much of your day to day life and actions, usually under the cover of "for the greater good"

day to day existence is regulated in Canada under the guise of "good governance" (a Canadian mantra) rather than personal liberty

Gravechild is right to a certain extent - Middle Eastern nations like Qatar and Kuwait have hardly any crime at all. You're certainly more likely to get your head kicked or your head blown off living anywhere in Europe.
