I find this disgusting. It happened in Japan. I thought Japan had come along quite a ways on the world stage in terms of being progressive.

The people's reaction, as described here, is nothing short of neanderthal. I filed this under General News. Even in modern societies, people get all knotted up over marital status, and some people even take it further to whether or not they have children. Neither are indicative of a person's worth. They are only indicative of other people's expectations. The woman, Ayaka Shiomura, is 35 years of age.

Outrage in Japan as woman lawmaker jeered for being single, childless

Be strong, Ayaka Shiomura. The egg is on the perpetrators' faces. All the people in the world who have a brain that works are behind you, Ms. Shiomura!

Very stupid. At least she appears to have relatively widespread support.

Japan is an interesting place. It's a mash of the old generation interacting with the new. The old guys are on the way out, but they still hold tons of sway and prefer established ways of doing things, even if some of it is wrong.

Given that Japan just banned child porn, I'm hardly surprised.

Japanese demographics are interesting. For example, my friend from Tokyo is really modern, progressive, and her entire family are way ahead of most Australians. On the other hand, she tells me that rural Japan is so conservative you'd think you were in the mid 20th century.

Despite that, Japan is hardly much worse than the US, UK, France, or Australia in those regards.

Japan is definitely a more conservative and traditional society compared to Western developed nations though, but it is improving, by all accounts.

    So which country is progressive?
Where are we setting the standards from?

    That's prejudice against neanderthals.

I think you're missing the point. Japan is a key player on the world stage. This certainly wasn't expected and the Japanese people were outraged.

That would be like being prejudiced against dinosaurs.

  9. On the outside (the millennials) Japan is a very modern, westernized society. In terms of gender equality, not so much.

In cases as late as Generation Y, traditions die hard. Women in Japan are expected to work until her mid-twenties and get married. If women don't get married after they turn 30, like most East Asian people, these women will be questioned by society. Once the knot gets tied, women are expected to resign from their jobs and become housewives so they can pop out kids. This is why we don't see that many women, particularly middle-aged women, work; especially in federal politics.

Obviously, the current government coalition in power is right-wing. Since they strongly hold on to traditional ideology (even more than western right-wing parties), they would seem to be socially far right-wing in our eyes. The only political parties that was successful among female politicians were the Japanese Socialist Party and the Democratic Party of Japan since they were the only political parties with the most female politicians at one point.

However, there aren't any influential female politicians. None of them are like Sarah Palin, Elizabeth Warren, or Hillary Clinton. But, I hope they improve.

I know a professional, never married Japanese lady who is over 30, now actually over 40, who moved to Europe and only goes back to Japan to visit. I'm sure she was subjected to the inquisition, or knew she would be. She seems to be very happy with her expat living situation.

It's more that usually people say these things,
And weigh certain countries against 'said' countries,
In regards to who's more 'morally correct'.

Though I am wholly aware of the point!

My best female friend gets harassed all the time about when she's going to get married and have kids. She's asexual (not aromantic, but she's not willing to have sex in order to have a relationship) and hates small children.
