South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is in more trouble than she’s willing to admit. It seems there’s yet another poll out putting her at under 50 percent in a head-to-head match-up with her Democratic opponent, state Senator Vincent Sheheen.

Now look: this is South Carolina. I mean, we started the damn Civil War down there. President Bill Clinton, ol’ Bubba himself, couldn’t even win South Carolina. We’re talking a conservative place, ok? This is not liberal land.

So any Republican should cakewalk down there right? Wrong.

The key thing to remember about South Carolina is the state’s demographics are changing, and with those population changes come political changes. Voters under 30 just don’t care about social issues. Some do, but most just prefer to let people be who they are and that extends to gay marriage.

Another factor is the increasing retiree population: Northeasterners are retiring to South Carolina, including African Americans who are coming home, having left the state in the 1960s and 1970s because of white hostility towards them. And of course you have to factor in the increasing Latino population. Add those factors together and you’ll understand why Nikki Haley won by only four points in 2010.

South Carolina is one of the most conservative states in the entire nation. Romney won SC by 10 points (54-44), and Nikki Haley is one of the most conservative governors in the US. Although she only won in 2010 by 4 points, it is more than surprising to see her in hot water like this.
