The European Court of Human Rights has, well, denied human rights.

Finland apparently doesn't have a gay marriage law, so they said that if a transwoman wants her true gender identity recognized, then she must divorce her wife.

Married trans people must divorce, rules European Court of Human Rights | Gay Star News

Am I the only one that this strikes as appalling, especially coming from something called a court on human rights?

I find this very disturbing myself . they are two people inlove and are already married, why should her and her wife be denied the right to be married just because one transitioned ?

Nope. This strikes me as appaling as well. Just another example of how far away LGBT equality is. :frowning2:

The weird thing about it is the "either/or" nature about it. You either get your gender recognition, or LGBT marriage, but not both. It's crap.

Not really LGBT marriage, because she's MtF. So for all intents and purposes right now, it's a heterosexual marriage. It becomes same-sex when she transitions.

The whole "but we have civil unions!" from the article is just a huge line of BS.

On one hand it sucks because every country should allow same sex marriages
But on the other it's awesome because it treats transgender people the same as cisgender people

Yeah, this used to be the case here. Changed recently. It's disgusting, really.

This is extremely disturbing. I can only hope that human rights activists over there can put an end to this.

Hence the "T" part of "LGBT". That's why I phrased it that way. Not gay marriage, but still not treated the way it should be.

What????? There is something up with these people. If I want to marry a man, then I can marry a man and be recognized as a man. There's no reason why I shouldn't!

The law regarding marriage should simply be: any two consenting adults who wish to get married, can do so, period. Gender, sexuality etc should not come into it at all. That would solve all of these supposedly complex issues in one stroke.

They are, generally speaking, but Finland has yet to recognise same-sex marriage. Hopefully Finland will legalise same-sex marriage soon, and this won't be an issue anymore.

This is exactly how it works in my country. You can't have both.

I completely agree. However, if Finland currently has a law against same-sex marriage then I fully understand why the Finnish government would rule against her having her true gender recognised and maintaining her recognised marriage.
