Ever since the Russian backed separatists shot down flight MH17, things have been escalating.

The Russian forces have set up near the border between Russia and Ukraine.
From there, Russian artillery have been firing upon Ukrainian soil.

As of right now, the Pentagon claims that heavier Russian artillery is moving towards the border, and that it could be delivered to the separatists as soon as friday.

In other words, welcome back cold war and Soviet Union.

Putin knows that the fears spawned during the cold-war era will keep the western world from taking any bold moves to stop him from doing what he wants, as long as he stays in his little corner of the world. He invaded a sovereign nation and annexed an entire peninsula without Western Europe or the U.S. batting an eye. The only response to Russian aggression has been to strengthen forces along the border of the E.U. and impose economic sanctions and travel bans. In effect a slap on the wrist and a bolt on the door, as long as he leaves the rest of the world alone he can do whatever he wants in Eastern Europe.

There is a relatively big chance that even if Russia keeps using artillery against Ukraine, Russia won't be able to let the separatists win. Their main city (Donetsk) has been cut of, and almost the entire border is in Ukrainian hands. So the Russians can't reinforce their troops with men and weapons any more.

The only way for Russia to win right now, would be letting their troops cross the border 'officially' and openly attacking Ukraining border posts, which would be a really big escalation. If Putin wished to risk that, I think he would have done that before.

But it wouldn't that strange if Putin changed his mind and send more troops in, in a desperate move to keep up the fight.. Let's hope that that won't happen...

Remember that during the Cold War, Russia invaded Hungary in 1956 and later Czechoslovakia (as it was then called) in 1968. The world did not start a war over these, but, the western approach was containment and diplomatic isolation. We've been down that path before: permanent non-recognition of Russian aggressions, and diplomatic isolation. Tricky times, and I am not looking forward to going back to that, but it's time the west started growing a pair and facing up to the fact that this mendocracy (a government built on lies), Putin's Russia, needs to be confronted until it collapses under the weight of its low and dishonest "leadership".

I agree with the gentleman above. We don't really want a repeat of anything Cold War related, so it's not surprise as to why we kept our noses out of this event. I'm just wondering as to what this whole fiasco will spill over into. I'm wondering if there'll be some sort of backlash towards the government since it is indeed a mendocracy.
