LGBT News After Suicide, Gay Teen's Eye Donation Rejected Due to Sexual Orientation

Every accepted but his eyes? Sounds logical.... I feel sorry for the people that actually needed the donation.

 

I'm confused. Why would the tissues in the eyes be more susceptible to having things that the coordinators were worried about than the liver and kidneys? I'm just profoundly confused...

 

That is horrible. I am still listed as an organ donor, but at the same time I hate those people, and I have a reason to, but that is a story for another time.

How does him being gay or not make any difference to his donation of his eyes? As Pret Allez said, I'm just profoundly confused.

Seeing how this person's life has ended in suicide, I can only imagine those eyes have seen things which no person should ever have to go through. I can understand people turning them down for this reason but orientation shouldn't be one of them.

Maybe the FDA thought that there were already too many episodes of Queer Eye For the Straight Guy?

Okay, I know that was dumb but it isn't any worse than them taking his other organs but not the eyes.

 

Disgusting. I send my heartfelt sympathies to the family for their loss, and hope that they work to honor their son's memory by continuing to fight on his behalf.

 

whut? I don't get that at all. They're just masses of tissue and synapses, like his kidneys or lungs. And from that photo, the boy had beautiful brown eyes.

 

Do they think that any straight person will see rainbows and stuff with those?

Suicide -- HOW? Literally -- how did he kill himself? Perhaps it didn't have to do with his sexual orientation but how he died such as the eyes rupturing or something.

That's the only reasonable explanation I could accept. As for if it were true about them not accepting his eyes -- then at least his other parts helped the people who were in need.

PS - quickly looked it up but I think only the cornea can be used for optic transplants.

 

Yea, I can't understand why his eyes would be rejected. The ban on blood donation isn't just if a person is gay it's whether a guy has had sex with another guy since 1977. Obviously this kid couldn't answer that question, but if they determined the other organs were safe then why not the eyes? It doesn't make sense.
