    Wasn't 2013, the year the world was supposed to end?:confused:
    I wouldn't trust anyone who said such things when they have a track record of being wrong all the time.:dry:

    The world will end several billion years from now when the sun goes through the inevitable end stages of a star's life cycle. Depending on the mass of the sun, it will either collapse and explode, or turn into a nebula or even form a black hole. In any of these situations, life is no longer possible on earth.

    Obviously this will be well beyond the frames of any of our lifetimes, so don't worry.

    The way we are living, destroying the planet and each other, I'd be surprised if we make it to March 2880!

    Going to end, meaning a 4000 to one chance, which is low but astronomically enormous.

    By then, scientists will definitely have the technology to obliterate an incoming asteroid with lasers or something, assuming that we don't all utterly destroy ourselves, and all life on this planet, with a thermonuclear war in the meantime.

    I think we're in Narnia. Not too sure.
    Doesn't Venus usually catch the asteroids that would destroy Earth and wipe out life on this planet? Either way, if time travel or reviving the dead isn't possible by then, I'll be disappointed, and we're doomed, but it might just slip away, like the one from I think 2 years ago.

    Instead of spending billions of dollars every year on things like space telescopes, or whatever NASA is working on nowadays, they should be working towards figuring out how to prevent things like this from happening in the future.

    @Damien

    Ya, we will take care of it.

    Just grab popcorn and enjoy the Science Show.

    With all due respect, these "things like space telescopes", are really, really important.

    Without entering in detail, these "things", or "whatever NASA is working on nowadays", generates knowledge. Knowledge (besides being important per se) generates technology. Technology generates security, confort, entertainment, life quality, etc. That includes (but does not limit to) knowledge that may be important to prevent things like this.

    "The scientist does not study nature because it is useful to do so. He studies it because he takes pleasure in it, and he takes pleasure in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful it would not be worth knowing, and life would not be worth living." -Henry Poincaré (mathematician, theoretical physicist, engineer, and a philosopher of science), in Science and Method (1908).

    I think you see my point.

    Btw, has anyone visited the Alpha Centauri Planning Permissions board recently? I'm starting to get paranoid.

    IIRC, when the sun is cooling to a brown giant, the earth's current orbit will be within the outer edge of Sol. The Earth will have already been destroyed by gravitational forces by that point, of course.

    I'm pretty certain technology can sort that out by then.. That's if we haven't destroyed ourselves by then.
