Theodore Wafer, the Dearborn, Michigan resident who shot and killed 19-year-old Renisha McBride because she crashed her car and knocked on his door at 4:00 AM asking for an ambulance, was sentenced today for 15-30 years in prison for his second-degree murder conviction as well as an additional 2 years for the illegal use of a gun. I felt the judge was too sympathetic to him, and should have thrown the book at him and given him a life sentence, or at least a sentence that would have been beyond the possible frame of his lifespan. IMO, his actions defy the most basic logic and there could not have been fear, rather a cold-blooded premeditation.

Wafer is 55 years old, so he'd be 87 if he serves his full sentence, though he could be released as early as 72 years old if he is released after serving the minimum of 17 years.

Thank God. I mean, it's better than nothing but still...give him 50-100 years in prison.

I'm fine with the sentence, since his life is now basically over.

The point is not to get the life sentence. The point is to completely destroy him as a person to serve as an example for others. Mission accomplished.

So, best case, he gets out of prison at 72, probably with insufficient retirement income, and without a job. And he's convicted of a violent felony crime.

I don't know much more ruined his life could get...

What was the circumstance again? Was he the one to shoot through the door or something?

Isn't the whole point of the justice system to provide rehabilitation for those that break the law? Am i missing something here?!

So basically, a glorified way to say "let's ruins someone's life so we can feel better about something that we can't change"?

What if it was an accident? Should then the punishment fit the crime? What if there were extenuating circumstances?!

But i guess in the end it's easier to "punish" people than to actually help them, because after all they don't deserve help, right?

^ this was sarcasm by the way.

Yeah. He heard someone knocking on the door at 4:30 AM, grabbed his shotgun and opened the door and saw a Black girl on the porch and shot through a locked screen door. I think the judge said it best that "Irrational fear is not an excuse for homicide."

My dad was mentioning something about this but didn't know any particulars. My mind just blanks at this sort of news. Cold-blooded murderer should get basic nutrition for survival and the option of breaking rocks or staring at a wall for amusement for the rest of his life.
