So as a gay person and a Europhile I am very worried about the rise of UKIP. They have a lot of homophobes and the like in the party

I see many disturbing signs in the rise of Fascist-style political parties in Europe.

Not to mention the Tea Party, and other such groups in the US: the number of hate groups had seen a dramatic increase in the past decade. And it seems to be the case elsewhere...

I would love to believe that our country hasnt yet sunk so low that we would turn to shadowy bigots however I would be lying if I said I wasnt worried. The good news is that no party could ever truly seize power in the UK and most of us arent that stupid, also the gains that we have made in the way of progress would not be easily undone.

Ukip are just saying what the majority of people want them to say. I don't believe that they are genuine people and not to be taken seriously.

For me UKIP is the new protest party, rather like the SDP in the early 1980's. They may pick up a few parliamentary seats in by-elections and at the general election next year, but I don't see them causing the earthquake that Nigel Farage keeps talking about. I think the media and polling companies are over playing the strength of UKIP. My greater worry is that the Conservative Party will be returned to office.

The problem is UKIP is so shady, they seem ok at a glance and they make some good points however they seem to have a fair share of idiots in their ranks. All to frequently one of their candidates will come up with something homophobic and stupid plus in the EU elections they were the only party who refused to comment on same sex marriage, even the bastards at BNP spoke about it.

I was going to link a video here, but apparently the user took it down (sadly). Basically, it addresses how Nigel Farage is pretty much the UK version of Bill O'Reilly. I hope that paints an accurate enough picture.

Homophobia is one of the least horrifying things about UKIP; their whole platform makes me want to throw up.

I don't feel that they'll be able to get power, but if they can harness Islamophobia even more now, they may get the support of the everyday racist who might currently vote more mainstream, not just the fringe.

UKIP's entire platform is bad, not just the homophobic parts.

UKIP and the BNP are the problem with anti-terrorism laws.

Didn't we have a thread about these guys in the run-up to the European Elections? Because that was fun.

But yeah, the only good thing about them is that might split the right-wing vote enough that someone other than the Tories can get in. Other than that, everything about them is just awful.

There is nothing concerning about UKIP at all. Their policies are populist Thatcherite, and Thatcher managed to deliver prosperity and individual freedom to millions of peoples lives.

UKIP will probably win the Clacton by-election and may win the Rochester & Strood and Heywood & Middleton by-elections, which will add pressure on Mr Cameron to give people a referendum on the undemocratic European Union.

I am sure people will want to point out a homophobic councillor in UKIP, but every political party has nut cases. Labour, for example, had a councillor who attacked another colleague with homophobic abuse in Rochdale.

The biggest threat to gays is from the left of the political spectrum, where islamists form an increasing number. Political parties like 'Respect' and organisations including UAF are openly homophobic and anti-semetic.

    Does this party promote individualism?

Yes I think it does promote individualism, though it also promotes community spirit such as saving pubs. Its not entirely crystal clear.

For who? There wasn't much prosperity in this part of the world during Thatcher's time in Number 10.

Even given your questionable claim, Thatcher got kicked out of office by her own party before she could ever distance the UK from the rest of Europe, which is UKIP's flagship policy.

Another of UKIP's policies of reducing immigration goes against the Thatcherite ideal of labour market deregulation and free markets/'freedom'.

I'm not sure if this posts counts as me defending Thatcher, haha - I'm just explaining that their policies contradict Thatcherism if you wanna somehow defend them by describing them as such. UKIP might be populist but they aren't Thatcherite.

These contradictions make their foundations/motivations even more sketchy to me.

Unless that individual or that community is Muslim...
