Honestly, I thought this was going to be one of the very last states to legalize it. Glad they swung!

West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D), who previously said he opposed same-sex marriage, issued the following statement earlier:

"As the attorney general stated today, recent rulings by several federal courts, combined with the refusal of the U.S. Supreme Court to hear this issue, make it clear that laws banning same-sex marriage have been declared unconstitutional. I do not plan to take any actions that would seek to overturn the courts’ decisions. West Virginia will uphold the law according to these rulings, and I have directed state agencies to take appropriate action to make that possible.

"Our state is known for its kindness and hospitality to residents and visitors alike. I encourage all West Virginians—regardless of their personal beliefs—to uphold our statewide tradition of treating one another with dignity and respect."

    Congrats WV.

I wonder who the last state will be. All my money is on Alabama.

I'd love to be a fly on wall in the churches across the country this Sunday.
Can u just imagine the sermons?
I guess praying away the gay backfired on them big time.
Or... just maybe this is exactly what jesus wanted all along?
    Marriage equality. Amen.

That's great news. I'm considering a job at the University in Morgantown, because I just can't afford the cost of living here, and this way, my partner would still be able to get health benefits, like he does here in Maryland.

Being able to enjoy the benefits of marriage opens up a lot of horizons, as we explore more rural places to live, or places in smaller university towns. Plus, I love nature and the mountains, and traffic and city life has taken it's toll on me. Plus, Baltimore would still be 4 hours away, and Pittsburgh about 90 minutes, and hiking, right there. Plus, the air would be a lot cleaner...here in the summer, the smog can get really bad, and the sky turns a sickly yellow-green.

So this is good news. I want to relocate, but don't have the $ to go too far, especially as it would cost a ton just to go back and forth to interviews in places I couldn't drive to...just not feasible, given how broke I am after trying to scrape by here in a land of stagnate wages and rapidly rising rents/prices...around DC, it's brutal.

And so, I tend to target places to live where it's cheap, and this is among the cheapest.

The one thing though: can you be fired from your job for being gay in WV? That's my biggest fear about when I leave school and look for jobs.

Not working for the University, thankfully. Most Universities tend to have some kind of LGBT protection clause. They also don't do drug testing, which I don't believe in, unless you fly planes, or stuff like that.

I was out in Michigan for about 10 years (1986-1995), and never lost a job. I do worry about the idea, but then again, if I sensed a place was homophobic, I'd also not want to work there, now that I ponder it. But it is a very valid concern, especially depending on how 'out' you're comfortable being.

But it's just beautiful up there in the mountains. It's very close to Frank Lloyd Wright's famous house, 'Falling Water', which is a ways over in PA. So a very lush landscape. And at points, I really do think the stress of the long commute and so much grey pavement and never any money to travel or do things is slowly killing me, or at least making me very, very depressed. Something has to give soon, and I worry it might be me, if I don't make tracks.

Morgantown is one of four cities in West Virginia that have ordinances banning discrimination based on sexual orientation, and one of three cities that have an ordinance banning discrimination based on both sexual orientation and gender identity.

Awesome! I honestly think my lovely state of Ohio will be one of the last states to legalize same-sex marriage.

You're probably right, since the 6th circuit will probably be the last to make a decision. Even if gay marriage is legal, the state still doesn't have any protection against employers if they want to fire someone in a gay marriage (as my employer has stated that it reserves the right to do this for example)

Alabama could be last but i think Mississippi will be the last there seems to be a lot of homophobia and racism. I hate to pigeonhole that state as backwards as i am sure there are incredibly nice people that live there but something tells me they will be last.
