The effort is a big improvement, but I really wasn't expecting them to get far.

I'm honestly not surprised. I shouldn't have expected so much from them. I guess all we can really do is let Catholics be as close minded and as hypocritical as they have always been and move on with our lives.

I'm actually surprised it lasted this long.

As I said in the other thread, changing tack would have meant the Catholic Church admitting they got it and continue to get it wrong on gays. They're just not prepared to accept any responsibility for the harm their doctrine and teachings have done to people, all in the name of pleasing God.

They also demoted Cardinal Burke, a leading US bishop, because of his long-time support for LGBT issues.

    Story here

The gift we offer is to teach the catholic church , how not to be a bigot .

Due to policy, I don't have anything to say about this matter.

I prefer them to hate us outright than make concessions to their stupid superstitions just to extend their longevity in the post-bronze age world.

Actually, he's a long time critic of Pope Francis and his "softening" stance on homosexuality and same-sex relationships.

Not surprised to see my skepticism validated.

I wonder if the catholic church is aware that it doesn't actually matter what it says. The days when it held sway over the lives of everyone in europe are long gone. I really don't give a fuck what it thinks about me and my kind; the church is becoming increasingly irrelevant, and things like this only make it more so.

It's indeed becoming more irrelevant these days. =) That makes me happy.

Me too. Anyway, don't expect it to change quickly. It took it till 1993 to admit that the earth orbits the sun, and not the other way around.

I'd like to add a thought: if God actually thought homosexuality was a sin/was wrong/was "against his plan", would he have even created gay people in the first place?

Well all the bishops went against what the Pope wanted.

Hardly all of them. By all accounts I've read, the progressives had a majority.

It just so happened that a simple majority doesn't cut it, and you need a 2/3rds majority.
There's still plenty of conservatives left, and also pragmatists who are fearful of being too open (e.g. in some countries homosexality is still a crime. A Church that says "no, it isn't", could be in trouble there)

So: I'm disappointed the measures failed. On the other hand, the Pope seems to be pushing in the right direction. Changing it in a single synod was probably too much to hope for.
But the church is an oil tanker. You don't steer oil tankers with a single turn of the wheel. Still being hopeful here that it's a start of something better.
