    What doe s everyone on here think is the most socially liberal or progressive state in the U.S? Also which country as well? In terms of states I can make a case for Massachusetts or Vermont or New York. any others you can think of? In terms of countries maybe Canada or England?

    I think the most liberal country in the world would probably be The Netherlands, but as for the United States, I would have to go with Vermont.

    Huh, that's a tough question. Vermont might be my choice as well, though I don't think they have legal weed, so that subtracts a few points. But maybe they will soon.

    The one thing about Vermont: though liberal, it ain't cheap! It's a place I'd love to live, yet seems like you almost need pre-existing wealth to live there. As in: Make a bunch of $ in NYC, then people move there.

    Not a lot of jobs since I've been keeping my eyes on Burlington as a place to potentially move to. But it does seem liberal, just hard to get by in.

    Non, non, non!

    France is a quite conservative country. There were mass protests against gay marriage (which simply weren't seen to that scale when gay marriage was passed in the UK), and I understand gay marriage still is not well received by many.

    You also have elements of what can be seen as religious intolerance in the form of Islamophobia/banning of headscarves in schools and public places. Perhaps though that can be viewed as liberal in pushing for female equality? Although there is an opposing thought that it removes an element of choice from women and is insensitive to religious practice.

    I'm not sure where I'd place my vote. I think perhaps the Netherlands due to their relaxed drug laws and attitudes towards sex which can definitely be seen as progressive.

    I think this is unfair - the French are more willing to protest against things they dislike, or protest for change, but polls indicate that majority of people in France support the legalisation of same-sex marriage, and the people you saw protesting on the streets against same-sex marriage were just a small but vocal minority. I'd call France a liberal country - more liberal than the UK in many aspects, especially regarding things like sex and nudity.

    DC while not technically a state, is the most liberal area of the US. Other than that, the next three would be Massachusetts, Vermont, and Oregon(in no particular order)

    I don't know about most liberal countries

    Sweden or Finland are probably the most liberal countries.
    I'd probably go with New York as the most liberal state. California's almost like Texas, where it's nearly another country on its own.

    Countries: Sweden.

    States: USA is in general pretty ignorant, but I'd say probably California is the best state.

    I'd say Cali too. When I came out as a transgender male to a bunch of people in my high school, they were mostly A-OK with it. One person even squealed and yelled "NOW I'VE FINALLY MET ONE!!!! (!) (!) (!) (!)"

    ….whatever that's supposed to mean….

    State: California maybe. Definitely not Massachusetts. They had a Republican governor, Romney, and there's a sizable conservative population there.

    Yes, probably this is one of the most liberal countries in Europe. Not sure about the french...

    The most liberal country in the world for LGTB? I'd say Canada. From what I have heard seems to be the place. I also had a very good feeling when I lived in California.

    Liberal? Well Vermont and New Hampshire would probably be tied as the most socially liberal states. NH is very economically conservative though. NH is just strange.

    Country? It really depends on what you're talking about. Scandinavia or Spain, maybe.

    "France" made me LOL.

    France is the Arizona of Europe.

    Better picks are like Sweden, Finland, and Norway.

    No state in the US could possibly be progressive enough. That's because Americans love controlling everyone.

    us state? california??

    as a country...I know 100% of the forum will disagree but my pick is still bulgaria :slight_smile::

    no capital punishment;
    all people are equal regardless of race, sex according to the constitution;
    no animal kill shelters;
    fine and imprisonment if you harm animal;
    very friendly towards foreigners;
    gay prides;
    freedom of religion guaranteed by the constitution;
    walkable cities;
    there are laws against marijuana or cocain usage but these laws are almost never applied;

    Only problem: gay marriage is NOT legal.

    Sweden/Norway aren't as friendly and liberal as some people claim.

    there's considerable hostility towards some groups of people in scandinavia. Of course as an American you won't notice that because they'd see you as a rich tourist or investor putting dollars in their economy. But tell them you're serbian, bulgarian or romanian and have "fun" afterwards...
