I'm honestly very surprised. The Methodist church I grew up in was incredibly homophobic and it wouldn't surprise me if they're disappointed in this ruling.

The one that I grew up in was very homophobic as well. It will surprise me if we do not see a split in the UMC denomination sometime in the near future. In it's current state, they have very liberal churches, and very conservative churches. So, there is a ton of tension there..

I didn't know that there was a liberal wing of the UMC to be quite honest. I've seen the ugliest of the ugly of the conservative wing growing up where I did. It would have been nice to have had an LGBT-affirming church in my small hometown, even if I wouldn't have been in attendance for obvious reasons.

I never saw the liberal wing of it until I came to college. I was surprised when they came to a pride meeting. I thought that they were going to try to make us straight. Instead, they talked about accepting each other. So, that was a very pleasant surprise. I wish that there were ones thst were more liberal in my hometown as well.

It sounds like they are having the same squabbles as Anglicans!

Usually, the rural UMC churches are conservative, but the ones in suburbs or urban areas are liberal when it comes to LGBT rights/affirming. There are some exceptions to this, but that is how it works normally.

wow... ok i go to a not so homophobic Methodist church in my home town and a very homophobic one a few miles away (my grandparents). I am my churchs new junior leader for conference... i took over my gay friends position. He was saying the majority in our region were accepting (Cal/Nev) so im half curious to see what this is all about
