LGBT News Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics announced Thursday that he is gay

Frankly, my suspicion is that this is a good thing done for a wrong reason and might actually backfire. Latvian political establishment is anti-Russian, not anti-Putin or pro-gay and it gets away with some of its policies only because of some legislation that smells too much like Jim Crow for the Russian minority (which is much more significant than anywhere else in the Baltics.)

That said, anything that advances positive gay visibility and weakens Putin's position in Eastern Europe can't be all bad. (IIRC the only other case where some Latvian politicians were outed as gay was a huge (not legally-underage but creepy as all heck) prostitution scandal about twenty years ago.)
