I'm rather pleased with the vote, even if it isn't binding. It's heartening to see steps taken in Europe to recognise Palestine, and hopefully it might lead to a more tolerant policy on the part of Israel and the US to allow Palestine to eventually achieve statehood through the UN.

Apart from the moral obligation to recognise Palestinians as people worthy of international, legal recognition, the potential of less violence between Palestine and Israel as a result of recognition is something to hope for.

Well, it's a step in the right direction. If more states recognize Palestine it could put more pressure on Israel to recognize them as well.

there are more countries that recognise the state of palestine, than there are that don't. israel will remain undeterred.

I'm surprised, considering their opposition to Kosovo and Scotland. Wouldn't they worry this might inspire Catalonian independence?

Sweden's parliament didn't vote on it, it was merely an executive announcement with no clear date of enactment.

And Catalonia's referendum is constitutionally invalid. That is, of course, because the government in Madrid designed it so they would be the ones to approve of whether separate nations within what's legally Spain could separate from the state, not the people of those nations themselves.

In his inaugural address Oct. 3, Mr. Lofven told Parliament that a two-state solution was the only way to resolve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. “Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palestine,” he said.

Malta and Cyprus are the only other West European countries to have recognized a Palestinian state. Britain’s Parliament passed a nonbinding resolution this month to give diplomatic recognition to a Palestinian state, although the government of Prime Minister David Cameron opposes recognition.

Romain Nadal, a spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry, said this month that France “will have to recognize Palestine,” although he did not specify when such a move might take place.

LGBT rights are non-existent in Gaza or the West Bank. Israel is the most Pro-Gay country in the Middle East.

Though, "progressive" nations like Sweden and Spain don't care as long as they can continue hating Jews.

In which way does recognising the right to statehood of Palestinians infringe on Judaism?

Wow! Rajoy, the man who believes that abortion is murder, has finally done something minimally productive and half-decent. Shocking.

Until the people who govern the Palestinians cease their support for terrorism, there will never be peace in the region.

Hamas has no intentions of ending it's terrorist actions in Gaza against Israel or against it's own people in Gaza. And Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank has no intention of controlling the radicals in his Fatah government.

If Palestine is recognized as a state then they can receive weapons much more easily from other terrorist states and attack Israel (Israel wouldn't be able to blockade Hamas from gaining weapons if Gaza was a country), which is not only a problem for the Jewish population there but also the Christian and Muslim populations in Israel.

Spain also has a history of brutally killing and expelling Muslims.

You'll find it happened in the same event, so don't make it seem as if Spain is specifically out to get Jews without having an anti-Muslim past, either. Both are utterly disgusting histories of racial and religion persecution, but it does give an important point you omitted.

Hey, Spain has a bad history with regards to killing with almost every religion, nationality and race including their own. They didn't make an exception for Jewish people.

Not Israel's problem. Israel has offered numerous concessions to the Palestinians with no positive results.

    - the 2005 removal of Israeli control in Gaza (2005 disengagement plan)
    - the failed 2000 peace talks (2000 Camp David Summit) between Israel and the Palestinians - in which Israel offered to give up like 90% of the west bank settlements
    - the failed 1990's peace talks that the left championed so arrogantly which essentially guaranteed a Palestinian state (Oslo Accords)
    - Israel's intention to give back the west bank and gaza after the Six Day War but was rejected by the Arab League (Khartorum Resolution...the three no's)
    - The U.N. plan in the 1940's to break the disputed territory into a Jewish state and to a Palestinian state...Arab league attacked Israel instead of accepting.

I support a two state solution, as a Jew and as someone with dual American/ Israeli citizenship, but giving car keys to terrorist leaders will never lead to peace.

You do not support a two state solution if you refuse to support two states.

And how utterly disgusting to dismiss rights as not worth dealing with. Palestinians do not have statehood and access to international legal structures because of Israeli pressure.
