This didn't immediately legalize it. All it did was launch the process for parliament to examine the issue.
    Still, good news nonetheless.

Also, if they approve it, it won't happen before 2016.

I'd say that's likely. I'm actually surprised Finland still hasn't legalized it, considering it's the only Nordic country to not have legalized it yet.

It's too bad adoption is still illegal for same-sex couples there. Still this is great news!

It's heartwarming to know that I can actually have a future in my own country. Though, I would be far more touched by the event, had I someone to plan a future with... this only seemed to enhance my feeling of loneliness.

    Avioliittolakikeskustelu synnytti hulvattoman meemitulvan
If I may just add, some hilarious images from the debate (these were actually said, in a public debate, BY MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, IN 2014), translations given below:

    1) "As a legislator, I simply do not comprehend [the need for marriage equality]"

    2) "But we don't know if the GDP will collapse [as a result of an equal marriage act]"

    3) "Here, next to me, sits a disgusting homosexual. I do not want to marry him."

    4) (referring to the previous speech) "Well, I certainly do NOT want to get married with deputy Väätäinen, either" (I love this guy, he's ALWAYS calm, he always responds intelligently and with clarity. He's amazing)

    5) "Cut the crap! Gay marriage is not suitable for heterosexuals!"

    6) "I went to Paris last year. There, we shouted."

    7) (The same thing, I think this is a reference to something, don't know what. Weird at any rate)

    8) "This isn't a question of human rights. This is a question of giving them."

    9) "If a person is bisexual, should they have a right for both a male and a female spouse?"

    10) "The equal marriage act would discriminate against heterosexuals. Is this what you call equality?"

    11) "Only a man and woman can give birth."

    12) "Do you really want to change the thousand-year-old marriage [tradition] into a sex union between man and man, or woman and woman?"

    13) "Sun shines, and rain [water] rains. I am not in favour."

    14) "The Sun doesn't shine at night, even if a law [demanding it] were enacted"

    15) "One can legislate that the Sun must shine at night, but it still won't!" (A picture of a midnight sun, taken midsummer in Lapland, highlights the irony of the statements)

As an American, I suddenly have a tingly feeling knowing that politicians from other countries are just as stupid as our own.

"Here, next to me, sits a disgusting homosexual. I do not want to marry him."

Is that really an appropriate way to talk during a parliamentary discussion?

I seem to have jumped the gun when I said these were all said in the parliamentary discussion. The creator of the images mentioned that the text in those two pictures were interpreted from the speeches.

On the other hand, I am very happy to hear that our arch bishop is strongly in favour of equality, and is happy that the churches views on marriage are 'stirred.'

    Yay, Finland! :eusa_clap

Even if the law don't go into effect now, I'm still happy for them.
