I am itching to hear from widespread media and responses about how much this case is far different from the case of Mike Brown given the fact that Mike Brown was a "thug" and there is clear evidence that Garner was not acting as a quote "demon" would. Especially given that Garner, in fact, does have a history of arrest and still chose not to react violently. It is a shame that footage was leaked before we all had a chance to assume and demonize him based on his history. I suppose it was merely another case of conflicting evidence. Who needs trials for the senseless loss of human lives anyway?

It is pretty different from the Mike Brown case, though. And since we actually have video of the police officer using an illegal move, I'm surprised there was no indictment. The Mike Brown evidence seemed to show that he was the aggressor and grabbed the police officer's gun. We can't say that for this one at all. So the fact that they were treated equally by the grand juries is surprising.

One thing that I'll point out is that the police officer did not use an illegal move, it was a move that was against policy. It was not against the law to use the move that he did. He could still face punishment from the force. They are also looking at civil rights charges still.

Inb4 everyone on my Facebook page shows their true colors on this.

I'm shocked and not shocked at the same time on this one. I'm shocked that even with video there was no indictment, but also not surprised since the prosecutor was not specially and independently appointed, and because the suspect was a cop.

Now this is something I can see people being actually outraged over (not as a racial matter). However, it's interesting the cases the media picks and choses to bring into the national spotlight.

    Not the first time:

    NYT

Reminds of that Randy Newman song, Rednecks. The north can be just as bad as anywhere...beautiful, sad song, the mix of irony and pathos.

    Rednecks

Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show
With some smart ass New York Jew
And the Jew laughed at Lester Maddox
And the audience laughed at Lester Maddox too
Well he may be a fool but he's our fool
If they think they're better than him they're wrong
So I went to the park and I took some paper along
And that's where I made this song

We talk real funny down here
We drink too much and we laugh too loud
We're too dumb to make it in no Northern town
And we're keepin' the niggers down

We got no-necked oilmen from Texas
And good ol' boys from Tennessee
    And colleges men from LSU
Went in dumb. Come out dumb too
Hustlin' 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes
Gettin' drunk every weekend at the barbecues
And they're keepin' the niggers down

    CHORUS
    We're rednecks, rednecks
And we don't know our ass from a hole in the ground
    We're rednecks, we're rednecks
And we're keeping the niggers down

Now your northern nigger's a Negro
You see he's got his dignity
Down here we're too ignorant to realize
That the North has set the nigger free

Yes he's free to be put in a cage
In Harlem in New York City
And he's free to be put in a cage on the South-Side of Chicago
    And the West-Side
And he's free to be put in a cage in Hough in Cleveland
And he's free to be put in a cage in East St. Louis
And he's free to be put in a cage in Fillmore in San Francisco
And he's free to be put in a cage in Roxbury in Boston
They're gatherin' 'em up from miles around
    Keepin' the niggers down...

    ----Randy Newman

    (Bold parts mine)

Helps to know who Lester Maddox was, that Newman is Jewish and a few other bits of context, but I love this song, and it seems more and more germane.

Having seen the video, I'm livid.

The victim in this case is a very overweight black male who posed no threat to any of the peace officers. Nobody indicated he was under arrest until initiating that move. The man was not obviously going for a weapon in his possession.

The officers simply choked him to death, over his repeated attempts to let them know that was happening.

I hope that the online hacker community will do good research and raise hell. The life of that officer needs to get ruined over this. I had hoped that a grand jury upon seeing this would find that the force had been not only excessive but unwarranted.

The jury should have recommended Man 1 or Murder 2.

I'd also love the internet community to do some research on the members of the grand jury.

By the way, I did actually look at the officer's response. It was a complete lie, insincere, and I was unmoved by it.

He's not a protector like he professes to be. I've seen real protectors. He is not it.

Okay, with the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, I can kind of get it. The evidence and what actually happened there is murky to say the least. I'm still not quite sure what happened there. But this? This is inexcusable.

While I realize not all police officers are like this scum Daniel Pantaleo, there is a reason they're there. They are there for US. They are working for US. They are making sure WE are safe. Their job is not to protect their own asses when they fuck up so exponentially like this. So when they do something like this, which by all definitions of the term is cold-blooded murder, and they get away with it, they are doing everyone in this country a disservice. EVERYONE.

Chilling to know that song's by the same guy who wrote "You got a friend in me", isn't it?

My guess is that you know this already, but just in case, Anonymous doxxed the info of the KKK during the Ferguson protest. Whether or not they'll do something in response to this is questionable, but they seem to only do things against entities like the KKK or WBC.

Randy Newman is amazing, he makes us examine ourselves. Check out his early stuff: Sail Away, beyond.

I'm more concerned about public safety instead of the Christmas tree lighting.

It's really despicable that police officers got away with the killing of another unarmed black man. Unlike ferguson, we know exactly what happened yet the police officers were still not even tried for their actions. I'm sick and tired of police officers being above the law instead of being held to a higher standard.

Apart from the utterly disgusting racism of this whole situation, why do grand juries still exist in the US?
