Now of course The Sun newspaper and similar tabloids aren't exactly known for their tolerant attitudes, but on this occasion they've killed two birds with one un-PC stone by insulting both blind and transgender people in one go:

The Sun on blind, trans Labour candidate: ‘How did she know she was the wrong sex?’ · PinkNews.co.uk

Earlier this week, in a rare move, Labour’s Emily Brothers, who is standing for Parliament in Sutton and Cheam, came out as transgender in an interview with PinkNews.

Reporting on the coming out today, Rod Liddle, former editor of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today Programme’, wrote in the Sun: “She’ll be standing at the next election in the constituency of Sutton and Cheam. Thing is though, being blind, how did she know she was the wrong sex?”

Also, change.org have started a petition calling on The Sun to apologise:

Isn't the Sun just the British complimentary of the US's World Weekly News?

A stellar example of Britain's exceptional journalistic tradition.

Sorry but you cannot call The Sun journalism. Yes we have crap tabloids, we also have a rich history of great newspapers.

It was deliberate. I was referring to the more brilliant papers like the Economist or the Times and sarcastically threw the Sun into their ranks. I get enough of my news from the British press to know full well about that. But Britain's rich history of glorified rags can't be brushed under the rug when this sort of stuff constitutes part of the mass media.

And yes, it is still journalism. Filthy, yellow journalism with more of a tradition in speculative muck-raking and page 3 girls, but it is a newspaper with journalists in its employ nonetheless.

The Sun can be a very unfunny joke sometimes.

It's sad that The Sun is the best-selling newspaper in the country. My grandmother buys it for the TV times - it's really atrocious. It barely qualifies as journalism - especially when they have tits on page 3.

I'm just thankful that we have The Guardian, The Independent, The Times and The Telegraph (even though I disagree with their political ideology) - otherwise known as 'quality press'.

Sometimes? Are you trying to suggest that at other times it produces quality journalism?

Rupert Murdoch trash. The sad thing is many people really do believe what they read in The Sun and cast votes on the basis of what it says. A detestable comic.

How could they do such a thin- Oh wait it's The Sun. That thing which presents itself as a family newspaper but has soft porn that objectifies women on the third page? I'd expect nothing more. #NoMorePage3.

Sigh.....there's usually so much hope to help a good cause, and then people f*ck it up! When I first saw the headline, I thought "oh, maybe this will be a beautiful moment where a trans person is asked how they knew they were in the wrong body, and then it will be great and shed some light..."

    And then it wasn't.... :frowning2:

Perhaps we should follow the people of Liverpool and not purchase this newspaper?

Well, the silver lining of this, is that they actually use the correct gender pronoun. One step at a time, I supposed.

I was under the impression that paper made The National Enquirer look like quality journalism. Oh, and to add to the list of decent journalism, I'd throw in The Register. They've got good coverage of the IT world. And they've got the BOFH.

We've got a similar tabloid called the 'Herald Sun' here in Melbourne, often referred to as the 'Herald Scum'. It's what you open when you want to know how Rupert wants us to view the world.

Oh my god, guys. This must be some huge conspiracy, guys! Maybe this woman has, I dunno, a brain? Or-or hands, so she can feel her own body?

...sarcasm aside, seems to play off that nasty stereotype that if someone's blind, they're not self aware.
