In a fuck yeah moment for today, superintendent Michael McVey was forced to resign. It was either that, or have to stand trial for tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. McVey (if only his name was Tim, right?) was indicted for the same in November of 2013.

I'm torn. Part of me thinks prosecuters should had gone all the way. That does of course run the risk that a jury would let him off. The other question raised by carcerality is "how does his ass being in jail stop rape?" The answer is, of course, it doesn't. However, it would set an important precedent: not only are we going to get rapists, but we're also going to get the people who protect them. And that's important, because most of the reason why it still happens is that rapists enjoy the protection of those around them. Survivors are rarely believed.

It will be impossible to stop any crime, at least through punitive means, unless those protecting criminals are also punished. In this case, McVey will not be punished, at least through the criminal justice system. However, he has been forced to resign, and of course, his name is now all over the internet as a guy who had to resign, or else stand trial for two felony counts. His life is, now, effectively ruined, as it must be.

All we have to do now is make sure the painfully awful "right" to be forgotten doesn't crop up in the United States, and we can let the permanent memory of the internet do its cold, cold work.

    Anyway, yeas? Nays?
